Engage - Act - Effect Change
| | | | |
Dear All,
The last 15 months have felt impossibly long — and many of us are feeling overwhelmed and exhausted and alone, and are spending more hours doomscrolling (or avoiding the news) than we'd like to admit. The chaos is relentless, the stakes feel enormous, and each news cycle brings more reason for depression.
If you're feeling similarly, you're not alone — and our next IndivisibleWin speaker event is for you. On Monday May 11, speaker Brian Corr will present "From Exhaustion to Action: How Communities Sustain the Work of Democracy".
Brian has spent decades organizing, and he knows what it takes to keep people connected and motivated when we're on a very long and challenging road together.
The talk isn't about what's wrong, but about what we can do together, and why it's worth doing. You will leave with practical ideas AND with a sense of community; we need to support each other as we continue to do the hard work of sustaining our democracy.
We know that democracy doesn't sustain itself. It depends on people — like you, and me — showing up and staying connected and refusing to give up. We hope to see you there. Details below — and then read on for other local and online actions you can take this week.

IndivisibleWIN Speaker Event
From Exhaustion to Action:
How Communities Sustain the Work of Democracy
| | |
Brian Corr is a community organizer, civic leader, and facilitator with nearly four decades of experience building power for social change. A Cambridge-based Democratic State Committeeman and past chair of the Cambridge Democratic City Committee, Brian has spent his career at the intersection of government, grassroots organizing, and community resilience.
| |
When: May 11
Where: Winchester Unitarian Society, Meyer Chapel ** NOTE different location than our other speakers
(enter from parking lot- access parking lot from Middlesex Tpk)
478 Main St, Winchester, MA
Time: 6p-7p
| | | |
At a moment when many of us feel overwhelmed, isolated, and unsure whether our efforts matter, Brian Corr offers a grounded, hopeful framework for staying engaged. Drawing on nearly four decades of experience in community organizing, peacebuilding, and civic leadership — including work in grassroots organizing and municipal government — Brian will explore how communities have sustained themselves through times of crisis and built lasting power for change. He'll share practical lessons and strategies about what keeps people connected, motivated, and effective when the stakes are high and the road is long.
This is not a talk about what's wrong — it's about what we can do together, and why it's worth doing.

Often asked question: Does sending post cards really make a difference?
From Center for Civic Engagement: In a study published in Political Behavior, Professor Michael Hanmer and colleagues examined an effort in Pennsylvania ahead of the 2016 presidential election.
Targeting citizens in the state Department of Transportation database who were not registered to vote, Pennsylvania election officials mailed out more than 2.2 million postcards with information about registering online and an impending registration deadline.
When comparing against a control group that did not receive the postcard, researchers discovered the effort led to a nearly 1% boost in voter registrations—roughly 23,000 new registrants—a significant number in a swing state like Pennsylvania. Moreover, roughly 85% percent of the newly registered voters turned out at the polls in November 2016.

STOP LOYALTY PAY: Massachusetts Stipend Reform
Massachusetts has a well-documented transparency problem: our state legislature ranks among the least open in the nation, with votes frequently hidden from the public and popular bills quietly killed in committee. One significant driver of this dysfunction is a stipend system that rewards legislative loyalty — committee chairs and leadership allies receive thousands of dollars in additional pay, creating incentives to follow leadership rather than constituents.

Willie T & Doctor X
Willie T & Doctor X performed their song, “No Kings,” at the No Kings rally in Winchester in March. They will donate 100% of all proceeds from the sale of their song “No Kings” to LUCE Immigrant Justice Network of Massachusetts.
The song’s lyrics speak to the human toll taken on an immigrant community living in fear in the “land of the free."
This digital recording is available for download on the Music Recordings page of their website, and also on their Bandcamp page.
People can pay whatever they choose on either of these sites.

Call Your Reps in DC
Tell Congress to vote NO on Voter Supression
| | |
Republicans are once again pushing for a series of voter suppression bills — all variations of their infamous “SAVE Act” which would create unnecessary obstacles for millions of eligible Americans trying to register to vote.
These bills wouldn’t improve election security — they would just make it significantly harder for everyday Americans to vote.
Tell your Representative to vote against the SAVE Act, the MEGA Act, or any bill that attacks our voting rights.
