A Note from the Executive Director

Greetings,

Please join us in Boston for our 2026 Fall Summit, Blueprints for Change: From Innovation to Resilience, on Monday and Tuesday, November 16 and 17. Together we'll explore examples of creativity, success, and resilience in food, nutrition, and health equity from around the country.

We'll also recognize the 14 winners of the 2026 Food Justice for Kids Prize, innovators who are working in school food and nutrition education, policy, and Indigenous food justice. You'll have a chance to learn more about their work at our Monday evening reception and poster session and again during our Tuesday lunchtime problem-solving sessions.

Registration is now open, and additional event details are below.

I hope to see you in November.

Warmly,

Nicolene Hengen

Executive Director

A Human-Centered Design Workshop Toolkit for

Food Systems Practitioners

A new toolkit from the Global Food Institute at George Washington University and Swipe Out Hunger offers a practical approach for putting people with lived experience at the center of food-system problem-solving. Designing With, Not For uses human-centered design to help practitioners move from identifying unmet needs to generating, prioritizing and developing solutions alongside the people most affected.

Medicaid Food Security Policy Dashboard

The Medicaid Food Security Network reviewed Medicaid 1115 waivers, managed care contracts, and other policy documents to identify strategies being used across the country to address food insecurity among children and families. The results are available in a searchable Medicaid Food Security Policy Dashboard with state-level examples.

Users can explore approaches such as food insecurity screening and referral, assistance, and navigation; data and evaluation; food security investments and benefits; and integration of SNAP, WIC, and Medicaid. Examples include Medicaid managed care requirements, community health worker and navigator models, and nutrition supports such as medically tailored meals, produce prescriptions, and groceries.

Intermediaries as Partners in Community Transformation

A new report from the BUILD Health Challenge explores the role that intermediary organizations can play in helping communities drive lasting, place-based change. Drawing on a decade of field experience, the report examines how organizations that work between grassroots communities and larger governmental, philanthropic, corporate, and civic systems can help create the conditions for communities to thrive.
