Where did Public Bathrooms Go?
II remember when I was a kid Mom having to dig through her purse for change for the public restrooms, which finally became Illegal in the US. There are many discussions throughout the world about does a human being have the right to have access to a bathroom. This article shows so many interesting historical aspects including the effect or “bargain basement” stores (Filene’s Basement anyone?).
The biggest challenge I have had as an adult with public restrooms is when I traveled to Beijing, but not really because of a shortage of them. My dear friend Carol and I realized quickly that we did not have the coordination for “squat toilets” which most public restrooms were, with possibly a couple of stalls with “western toilets”. Small restaurants for example, usually only had squat toilets. So as we toured the country for five days, and the other five people with us were all men, we mandated that the guide had to find us “western toilets”. I have never been so glad to see a hotel lobby bathroom.
Another interesting thing was when you went into many of the public toilets, there is a big roll of toilet paper on the wall and you have to get some before you go in the stall. There is none in many of the stalls. Have to thank out Chinese “sisters” who knew we did not know as soon as we walked in and through hand signals let us know we needed to get some and take it with us!
