Cetera Compliance recently updated their guidance regarding MyRepChat. They stated that Personally Identifiable Information (PII) should NOT be sent via MyRepChat. This includes account numbers, social security numbers, dates of birth, copies of driver’s licenses, and any other confidential customer information.
Cetera Compliance provided the following reasons why PII should NOT be sent via MyRepChat:
- Messages in MyRepChat are encrypted while in the MyRepChat App; however, they become unencrypted as soon as they are received by the other party’s phone carrier.
- Text messages can easily be intercepted.
- Text messages maintained on a client’s phone are not encrypted.
