Welcome to the Friday Waypoint where you'll find the latest updates about opportunities & activities with the Florida Trail Association.

Hurricane Safety & Updates

As Hurricane Milton approaches, our thoughts are with our members and communities in the storm's path. We encourage everyone to stay informed, prepare, and protect what matters most. Please note that public lands and recreation sites throughout the storm’s path will be closed, including many sections of the Florida Trail. For your safety and the safety of others, we kindly ask that you respect these closures.

For up-to-date trail information and to report trail conditions, visit: floridatrail.org/trail-closures-and-notices. You will also find land manager contacts and other important resources.

While we brace for Hurricane Milton, recovery efforts are already underway to address the extensive trail damage caused by Hurricane Helene.

The Florida National Scenic Trail (FT) has suffered significant damage, and the Florida Trail Association, in collaboration with the USDA Forest Service and our partners, is working diligently to assess the destruction and begin recovery efforts. Teams are already on the ground in the hardest-hit areas.

We are still in need of volunteers to assist with clean-up efforts, particularly for the Hurricane Helene clean-up project along the Suwannee River and the Next Generation Coalition project in the Ocala National Forest. If you are able, register to volunteer at floridatrail.galaxydigital.com/need

Stay safe and thank you for your continued support of the Florida Trail community.

In Memoriam: Dorothy “Dot” Morrison

Dot Morrison was a cherished and valued member of the Florida Trail Association (FTA) community. Joining the FTA in 1997, Dot quickly became one of the Sandhill Chapter's most dedicated and active leaders. As the founder and organizer of "The Thursday Hiking Group," she brought together hikers of all skill levels, sharing her love for the outdoors.

Over the years, Dot's contributions were numerous, and her leadership and volunteer spirit earned her well-deserved recognition. In 2023, Dot received the prestigious Special Service Award, an honor given to individuals who have made significant contributions to the FTA at both the state and chapter levels. Her commitment to the FTA was highlighted once again in the Summer 2024 edition of Footprint, where she was mentioned in the “How the Sandhill Chapter Reimagined Itself” article, further underscoring her valued efforts.

When asked why she chose Thursdays for her hikes, Dot’s playful response was quintessentially her: “Monday, Wednesday, and Friday were gym days, and Tuesday was kayak day—so Thursday was all that was left!”

Dot's spirit and legacy will continue to inspire those who follow in her footsteps. Hike in peace, Dot!

Reach out to membership@floridatrail.org if you’d like to lend a hand!
