Bishop-Elect Richard Lawson's Ordination is June 27th

I wanted to update everyone on the collection we did for Richard Lawson, our soon-to-be new bishop!

The Pectoral cross was secured, and thanks to the generous donations we received, we are also able to purchase a black cassock, which he will also need. These will be presented and given to him the day of his ordination. I know Richard will be very grateful to the people of St John’s for this gift.

Thank you to all,

Julie Leavitt

Senior Warden

Tickets for the Bishop’s Ordination

Due to the limited seating available, St. John’s has been allotted 25 tickets to Bishop-Elect Richard Lawson’s ordination service to be held at 10:00 am on Sat. June 27, at the Cathedral Church of the Advent in Birmingham. To ensure maximum fairness, we will distribute these tickets via random lottery. If you would like to attend the service in person, please complete the form below to be entered into the drawing. All forms must be received by Sunday, June 7, to be eligible. A maximum of two tickets will be available for each household.

For those without a ticket, the ordination service will be available to watch via livestream, and those details will be sent out as available.

Thank you for your understanding!

Outreach for June

little_free_pantry_600_x_600_px_p3.png

Meant to provide shelf-stable items for people who just need a little something extra, the Little Free Pantry allows people to come and go – taking what they need, leaving something if they can – with anonymity and dignity.

For our June Outreach Drive, we are collecting food items to keep the Little Free Pantry stocked. Food items should be non-perishable and easy to open.

  • Instant oatmeal and cereal cups
  • Canned foods like tuna and chicken, fruit and vegetables, soup, chili, and pasta
  • Cereal/granola/protein bars
  • Peanut or cheese snack crackers
  • Dried fruits and vegetables
  • Instant food cups like ramen and macaroni cheese

Items may be placed in the brown collection bins in the narthex and office hallway or put directly in the pantry anytime the shelves need to be stocked.

VBS REGISTRATION

Monday, June 22-Friday, June 26

9:00 am – 12:00 pm

Inspired by the lives of saints like Francis and Martin of Tours and Therese and Catherine, St. John’s Hero Academy VBS invites children to consider how following Jesus’ call to love and serve others is the most heroic thing of all. Children will create projects in the Hero Maker Design Studio, play high-energy games in the Gamer’s Gauntlet, hear stories of the faithful in the Hero Archives, and relax with a treat or two at the Holy Hero Cafe. All the while, they will discover that we can indeed serve like the saints!

VBS SUPPLY DRIVE

Do you know how many ounces of Sun Butter it takes to make VBS happen? The good news – none, this year! (Last year, it took 400…if you were wondering). Sun Butter aside, there’s still LOTS to acquire prior to the best week of the summer. Below, you can take a look at Amazon lists curated just for St. John’s VBS. If you’d like to purchase any of these items, please ship them to the church or bring them to the church office by June 15!

Please note that shopping lists for snacks will be compiled and distributed when as-close-to-final numbers for participants becomes known.

Thank you, and please don’t hesitate to reach out to Sam if you have any questions!

Caring for St. John's Tablecloths

Just a friendly reminder that if you or your group uses the church tablecloths, please wash, dry, and return them after your event so they are ready for the next group to use.

We appreciate everyone's help in taking care of our shared supplies and keeping things running smoothly. Thank you!

Common Ground Community Garden

These early summer blooms of this native Bottlebrush Buckeye are something to wait for! So intricate! These shrubs can grow up to 8' tall in the right environment. Ours here at Common Ground is in a rather dry, shady spot, so it has not grown appreciably but holds its own in spite of that. (Don't those blackberries look good enough to eat? Hurry down and get a couple before they are all gone.)
