Transform Rockford Celebrates Big Win for Arts & Revitalization

The Rockford Area Arts Council (RAAC) has been awarded $1.54 million from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to clean up the former National Guard Armory. This grant lays the groundwork for transforming a long-vacant site into a vibrant center for visual and performing arts, community gatherings, and artist collaboration.

The Armory project is a cornerstone of RAAC’s long-term vision—and a direct reflection of our community’s commitment to arts and culture. When Transform Rockford began its work, one of the earliest recommendations was to create a cultural plan. Thanks to the leadership of RAAC and input from residents across the region, that plan was launched last year—and now, we’re seeing it in action.

This is not just about redeveloping a building. It’s about reimagining what’s possible when we invest in creativity, collaboration, and community identity.

We applaud the Arts Council and everyone involved for making this vision real. This is what transformation looks like.

Building a Stronger Rockford, One Neighborhood at a Time

Transform Rockford is proud to be a partner in the Livable Communities Initiative, an effort focused on strengthening Rockford’s middle neighborhoods—those areas that are stable but need targeted support to thrive.

Launched last year, the initiative began with the Keith Creek neighborhood, chosen for its potential and its need. Now, as we prepare for the 2025 application cycle beginning June 2, Transform Rockford will work alongside Region 1 Planning Council and City of Rockford to develop outreach strategies and connect residents with the resources that can make a real difference.

By investing in these neighborhoods, we’re not just improving homes—we’re building community, pride, and long-term momentum.

Students Building More Than Homes—They’re Building Rockford’s Future

Transform Rockford celebrates the powerful partnership between Rockford Area Habitat for Humanity and Rockford Public Schools, where students are gaining hands-on experience by helping construct affordable homes in our community.

This initiative does more than teach valuable career skills—it actively addresses our region’s housing shortage while uplifting neighborhoods, one home at a time. It's a shining example of how education, workforce development, and community revitalization go hand in hand.

Programs like this are laying the foundation for a stronger, more connected Rockford.
