"Education is the key to unlocking the world, a passport to freedom."
Oprah Winfrey
.
Dear Southern Door Community,
The education our seniors have received will provide them with the access to a wide variety of choices as they go forward with their own passport to freedom. Some students are fairly certain about the next steps in their journey while others are open to all the possibilities that lie ahead.
I want to express our appreciation to the Class of 2019 for all their leadership, academic contributions, co-curricular success, and community service. Throughout the years, they have distinguished themselves as a class. This was especially evident at Wednesday night's Awards and Scholarship Program. A group of students from this class earned over $450,000 in scholarships from individuals and organizations recognizing their academic excellence, leadership, and volunteer work. Amazing!
As we celebrate their graduation this coming Sunday, we also thank all the parents, family members, and community groups who have worked together side by side with our staff to help our seniors graduate college, career, and community ready. Your continued influence in their life will be important as they begin the next chapter in their book of life!
Patti
Patricia Vickman, Superintendent

STEAM TEACHER RECEIVES NATIONAL CENTURYLINK TEACHING & TECHNOLOGY GRANT
Mrs. Jessica Meacham, Elementary STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) teacher, was surprised with a visit from Wally Purdun, Manager of CenturyLink’s Regional Operations. He presented her with a check of $4,874.85 as a winner of the CenturyLink Clarke M. Williams Foundation Teachers & Technology Grant.
Meacham says: “This grant will
enable the purchase of iPads to be used as design assistants to help students build capacity as they Ask, Imagine, Plan, and Design their projects. The iPads will help them transition from being consumers (passive learners) to creators (active learners).”
Southern Door implemented a STEAM class for 60 minutes/week for each K-5 classroom as a means for developing the four C’s: Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, and Creativity.

DISTRICT ONE OF 20 IN THE STATE TO RECEIVE A FAB LAB GRANT
The Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) announced that Southern Door County School District was the recipient of a state grant to fund new fabrication laboratory (fab lab) facilities, which will equip Wisconsin students with essential skills for the 21st century’s global economy. Southern Door was awarded $25,000 to create a Middle School fab lab.
This grant will enable us to provide fab lab equipment for the middle school which is exciting for our students and staff. Over two-thirds of our high school students as well as over thirty community residents have now taken coursework in our high school fab lab, so we know that the interest in this type of learning experience is high.
WEDC’s Fab Labs Grant Program is designed to support hands-on learning in the subjects of science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM) by assisting public school districts with equipment purchases such as 3D printers, laser engravers, computer numerical control routers and plasma cutters for instructional and educational purposes.
