City of Indianapolis & State of Indiana Support UNITE INDY’s Reentry Transportation Program
The No. 1 obstacle to getting and keeping a job for those returning to Central Indiana from incarceration is the lack of affordable, dependable transportation.
Grants from the city’s Office of Public Health and Safety and the state’s Family and Social Services Administration, Division of Mental Health and Addiction will enable UNITE INDY to eliminate that obstacle for many more who need a second chance by transporting those in reentry to work sites they could never reach without UNITE INDY's transportation program. Plus, they are working at jobs that pay a living wage and for employers who understand their special circumstances.
For two years, UNITE INDY worked with an Employer Partner, Park 100 Foods, to develop the Reentry Transportation Program. The partnership currently carries eleven van loads of men and women to and from multiple shifts of work every day.
Jim Cotterill, President of UNITE INDY said, “There is no shortage of job opportunities available, and thank God that every day there are more employers willing to hire convicted felons. Thanks to the State of Indiana and the City of Indianapolis, we’ll now be able to supply dependable transportation—at no charge—to many more who need a second chance." Stay tuned. More to come!

THE WIDOW'S MITE:
Pendleton Inmate is Regular Donor to UNITE INDY
Individual donors are important to every non-profit organization. Still, we were surprised and filled with gratitude when Arthur, an inmate at Pendleton Correctional Facility, began sending us donations from his small income as a facility employee. He learned about our work through a member of our Inmate Correspondence Team and wanted to help.
His donation always comes with a message of encouragement and thanks, and he is faithful in his giving. Like the widow in the parable of The Widow’s Mite, Arthur gives not from his surplus, but all he has to give. We are blessed to have him as part of our circle of support.

UNITE INDY PARTNER:
Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic Gives Second Chances
Julie Mennel and her staff work tirelessly for those who qualify under the 2014 Indiana Second Chance Law to expunge criminal records. She says, "I don't have to tell you how impossible it is for a person with a criminal record to get the job they are really qualified for, or to get housing where their family feels safe." She refers to the work as Project GRACE, and feels called to "seek justice, love mercy and walk humbly," as directed in Micah 6:8. "It's a privilege to walk with those who are ready and deserving of a second chance," she added.
Julie and others at the Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic are partners with UNITE INDY in the restoration of lives after incarceration. Our thanks to them for all they do!

UNITE INDY Organizing A Clothes Pantry for Reentrants at MCCJC
When a person has paid his debt to society and emerges after long term incarceration, their old jeans probably don't fit. Their old clothes may not exist at all, much less anything that is presentable enough to wear to a job interview. That's where churches are stepping up.
As UNITE INDY takes its place in the Marion County Community Justice Center (MCCJC), it has requested a room that will be stocked with donated clothes for both women and men who are being released. Consider a clothes drive at your church, or we can direct you to an organization that is already working with us to gather clothing. Email us here!

KEEPING THE POOR POOR:
Same Day Cash! Bad Credit? No Problem!
You’re approved! These are the come-ons payday lenders use. They know how irresistible a quick and easy $300 sounds to someone who is desperate. Seven out of 10 borrowers spend the money on recurring monthly expenses—money they’ll need next month too, when they are trying pay the first loan off. The typical Annual Percentage Rate (APR) is 399% on loans that are targeted at poor consumers with little financial literacy, and most have to take out second, third and fourth loans to pay off the earlier loans. Bankruptcy is common.
Predatory lending affects small businesses and the elderly too. We'll expose some of these lending methods in the months to come, but here's an example: Equity Stripping. The borrower is desperate and can't pay his bills. But, if there is a lot of equity in his home, the lender knows eventually, he'll be able to get his hands on it. Pretty soon the borrower is not only broke, he is homeless.
Indiana legislators take notice: Thirty-two states now cap the APR at 36 % for a $2000, six month loan. We need to stop lining the pockets of those who are nothing less than predators to the poor, elderly, and needy. There is a growing coalition to get a common sense rate cap in place, of which UNITE INDY is a part.

KIDS NEED THE RESPONSIBILITY OF WORK:
The Era of Aggressive Entitlement?
Executives say we’ve entered the "Era of Aggressive Entitlement." According to a new survey, 1 in 5 executive leaders agree: “No one wants to work,” and a Gallup poll says that 86% of employees are “actively disengaged at work.” Wow. Actively disengaged? Try that with parts coming down the assembly line at a rate of three every minute and you have to solder two wires onto the part in 20 seconds and get it back on the moving belt. That was my summer job on the line at a factory making loud speakers. But whatever the job, a job is an important part of the development of a successful life. In many homes today, the ONLY work a child is encouraged to do is homework. They don’t make their beds, pick up a dish, or wash a car. No wonder many adults are left wondering if their 30-something ‘child’ will ever move out of their basement. Read Nancy’s blog post here!

Support of Ministries and Charities:
Since 2017 UNITE INDY has provided a free web-based system at UNITEINDY.org that connects churches, ministries, and other charities to share their volunteer needs or needed items. UNITE INDY also provides the manpower necessary to assist smaller organizations—that have no one to upload needed items—the help they require to access this service. Through this portal, UNITE INDY has brought hundreds of volunteers and thousands of dollars worth of needed goods into the hands of those who assist the poor.
Serving the Servants:
UNITE INDY comes behind urban pastors and ministry leaders by addressing personal and professional needs with free services for those who work tirelessly in their neighborhoods to care for the needy and bereft.
Remember, almost 1 out of every 3 children in Indianapolis lives below the poverty level, yet even in the aftermath of the COVID shut down, as our economy comes back to life and employment is returning, all this good news stops at the lines surrounding many of our inner city neighborhoods. In some neighborhoods of Marion County unemployment is now 21%, and poverty remains the overwhelming divider of people.
Please donate to UNITE INDY now. There are a number of choices that are all secure and safe. By sending your fully tax deductible gift* now we can have a greater impact meeting needs in our community in 2021.
Many, many thanks!
*UNITE INDY, Inc. is approved under Internal Revenue Code (IRC) Section 501(c)(3) as a Public Charity, donors can deduct contributions they make under IRC Section 170.
