"FOOD TASTES BETTER AT SEA" DINING ABOARD THE SS UNITED STATES LAUNCHES TODAY

Our newest digital exhibition "Food Tastes Better at Sea" Dining Aboard the SS United States launches today on the Conservancy’s website.

Presented by our Curatorial Associate, J. van Kuilenburg, this exhibit showcases a

selection of the Conservancy’s extensive collection of SS United States art, artifacts, and

archival documentation.

Featuring passenger and crew photos, oral histories, ship blueprints, and other artifacts, the exhibit explores dining as a key facet of the luxurious travel experience aboard the SS United States and the ship’s food storage and preparation technologies as a microcosm of the ship’s exceptionally modern technology

“The SS United States is the fastest ship in the world. We also have Otto Bismarck. (Bon Appetit!)” Commissioned by United States Lines, January 1967, Holiday Magazine.

At this intersection of fabulous food and exceptional innovation was the Big U’s head chef, Otto Bismarck, who developed and prepared wide-ranging cuisines aboard the ship. As pictured above, Bismarck's food rivals the ocean liner’s speed as a selling point to prospective passengers: "What a pity it's just fifteen superb meals from the time you leave New York until you arrive in Europe."

The history of these superb meals has been preserved through culinary objects and images from family photos around the dinner table to beautifully illustrated menus in “Food Tastes Better at Sea” Dining Aboard the SS United States. To visit the digital exhibit, click HERE.
