Our Good Work, Winter 2025

From the Executive Director

It’s deep winter – we’re getting ready for tree tapping – for the hope of spring.

With farming we know we’ll face seasonal challenges and unpredictable events. We also know to hang on to hope, hard work, and a community of support. At this time, when we face an unprecedented amount of uncertainty from the federal government, let’s lean into these strengths as we work to support our local farms.

Now more than ever, Land For Good remains committed to strengthening farmer success. We know farmers are a critical resource for our local communities. And advancing secure farmland access, tenure, and transfer will be equally critical to ensuring a robust local food system and economy. Our winter programming continues to offer many avenues of support and resources.

Recent actions at the federal level will have a direct impact on farms and organizations across our region. We’ve heard from farmers concerned about increasing supply costs, potential labor shortages, and cuts to federal contracts. The federal grant freeze is creating unease and confusion for many agricultural organizations in our region who, like Land For Good, utilize federal funds to provide critical farmer resources.

If you share any of these concerns, we welcome your partnership in the days ahead

Sincerely,

Shemariah Blum-Evitts

Executive Director

Job Announcements

Hear from farmers going through a farm transfer or succession

Farm transfers can be complicated. Hear from both senior generation and junior generation farmers who have recently gone through a farm transfer or succession. They talk about the issues that arise in a farm transfer to a next generation or when there is no one in the family to take over the farm. These stories plus the full webinar series are on our YouTube channel.

It's never too early or too late to plan for a successful farm transfer. Find resources for transferring a farm on our website. Or reach out for no-cost individualized support. Fill out a Farm Transfer Form to connect with our team.

Make your land available for farming with our resources

Our goal is to help farmland owners feel empowered and prepared to share their land with farmers as an important piece of the crucial farmland base of New England. When a landowner makes land available for farming, it helps secure a future for farming in our communities. Productive, sustainable uses for all or part of a property can bring many rewards!

Find resources for making land available for farming and explore the motivations, strategies, and mechanics behind it. Or reach out for support and fill out a Landowner Form to connect with our team.

Meeting with farmers, food producers & service providers

Our team has been working in the community and at events across the region this winter. We were excited to connect with farmers and partners at the 2nd Annual Southeast New England Agriculture Conference and Trade Show in Massachusetts. We hosted two workshops at the conference, as well as a booth at the trade show. Conversations centered around how to go about finding farmland, how to connect with landowners, and how and when to draw up a farmland lease. Read more on our Blog!

Spotlight our board leaders

We are shining a light on our Board of Directors for their unwavering commitment, insightful guidance, and invaluable contributions to our organization. Their leadership and vision are instrumental to our mission. We thank our outgoing members - Deborah Leonard-Kosists and Daniel Ungier - and all our members, who have contributed so much to Land For Good for many years. And we welcome new members and long-time partners - Jennifer Hashley and Allison Poirier - as they step onto the board. On behalf of our farmers, thank you!
