MAYOR'S UPDATE

From the desk of Mayor Rika Levin

On behalf of the Village Board of Trustees, I want to thank the Department of Public Works for your diligent effort in clearing our streets during this past weekend’s snowstorm. Your team’s ability to manage heavy accumulation ensured safe passage on our hills and kept the roads clear for our first responders and essential travelers. We recognize the long hours and physical toll this work requires and sincerely appreciate your commitment to keeping Ossining moving.

New to Ossining? Here’s the Scoop on Snow Emergencies:

As the winter weather rolls in, we want to make sure our newest neighbors aren’t caught off guard by our local Snow Emergency rules. In the Village of Ossining, when a big storm is on the way, the Village Manager may declare a Snow Emergency. This helps our DPW crews clear the roads quickly and safely so emergency vehicles can get through.

Where NOT to Park: When an emergency is called, parking is prohibited on designated Snow Emergency Streets. You’ll see permanent signs on these roads that say "No Parking During Snow Emergency." Here is a list of the roads included:

  • Broad Avenue, South From South Highland Avenue to State Street
  • Croton Avenue, Both Sides, Entire length
  • Dale Avenue, Both Sides, Entire length
  • Edward Street, West Side, From Broad Avenue to Washington Avenue

Green Holidays: Small Choices, Big Impact!

The holidays are a time for joy, but they can also create a lot of extra waste. Celebrating sustainably is a wonderful way to protect our beautiful environment—and it can even save you some money!

Here are a few simple ways to keep your holidays green this year:

Recycle Batteries Properly: Did you know rechargeable batteries (Lithium-ion) don’t belong in your regular trash or curbside recycling? They can actually cause fires in the trucks! Please use a local drop-off site (like many hardware stores or the County H-MRF) to dispose of them safely.

E-Waste-Do it the Right Way: Don't toss the old one in the bin. TVs, computers, and electronics should go through manufacturer take-back programs or be discarded on approved e-waste pickup dates.

Cut Down on Food Waste Holiday feasts are the best, but the scraps don't have to go to the landfill.

  • Compost: If you aren't composting at home, remember that Ossining has a dedicated Food Scrap Recycling Program! You can drop off your food scraps (no meat or bones) at Cedar Lane Park (click here for more info).

The After-Life of Your Tree Real trees are biodegradable and should never go in a landfill!

  • Village Pickup: Real Christmas trees will be picked up on your scheduled Yard Waste days.
  • Prep it: Be sure to remove all lights, tinsel, and decorations before putting it out.
  • Give back to nature: Consider breaking down your tree and placing branches in your yard to provide winter cover for birds. Or, call a local farm! Pine needles are a great source of Vitamin C for some animals.
  • Find your date: Not sure when your yard waste day is? Check the Recycle Coach Calendar here: Village of Ossining Recycle Coach

Small changes by all of us lead to a big impact for our town. Let’s keep Ossining green and clean this season!

The Westchester County Department of Public Safety is accepting applications for seasonal park rangers to patrol county parks next summer, with a deadline of February 22. These positions pay at least $17 hourly and offer aspiring law enforcement professionals valuable experience through park supervision and mandatory peace officer training. Applications are available online at the Department of Public Safety’s web pages: http://publicsafety.westchestergov.com.

The newly elected and reelected members officials in the Village & Town of Ossining will be formally sworn in at a community event at noon on January 1st at the Joseph G. Caputo Community Center. This event is open to the public, and everyone is invited to attend.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish our entire community a very Happy New Year as we look forward to a bright and prosperous 2026. Please be advised that our municipal offices will close at noon on New Year’s Eve and remain closed all day on New Year’s Day in observance of the holiday. We look forward to serving you when we reopen for regular business hours on Friday, January 2nd.

In observance of the New Year’s holiday this week, the Village Board will not be meeting. Please join us on Wednesday, January 7th @ 7:30 PM for our 2026 Reorganization Meeting.
