Fall Family Day Was a Great Success!

On September 14th, the Outdoor Buddies Fall Family Day of fishing was a huge success! There were close to 170 men, women and children enjoying a beautiful day of fishing and making memories with their friends and families and volunteering!

The fishermen and women made up of youth, folks of every age with disabilities and veterans started out the day fishing in ponds that were stocked by the generosity of Craig and Catherine Harrison who donated $5,000 in the name of their late son Chuck Harrison who sadly passed away while putting his bass boat in a lake! Chuck Harrison passed doing what he loved to do! The main pond up front was named “uncle Chuck’s fishing hole”! I heard more than once that ”THAT MAN COULD FISH!”

There were large rainbow trout 3 to 5 pounds were stocked along with large bluegill and perch so everyone could catch, clean and cook the fish they caught! Fun was had by all! Over 40 of Chuck Harrison’s close friends came out to volunteer in chucks memory to help make this event the success it was!

For lunch we provided 100 lbs. of fried walleye fillets and Nordy’s BBQ! The walley came from Henry’s Pub restaurant on downtown 4th street in Loveland CO, where they have walleye every Sunday! I strongly suggest you go eat at Henry’s pub!

Desert was provided and donated by “The Colorado Cherry company “who donated 400 cherry pies!

After lunch we drew the winners of all the prizes such as fishing poles and fishing gear for young and old!

This event could not have happened without the support of Colorado Youth Outdoors leadership of Luke Brough and Courtney Strouse as well as the entire staff of CYO!

Outdoor Buddies has been building a new pontoon program to serve the veterans, youth and disabled folks of Outdoor Buddies! We had our new pontoon boat at this event where we named her ”HOPE.”

All in all it was a magical day and I thank our Outdoor Buddies leadership that continues to build programs that directly impacts the lives of our disabled, youth and veterans that we are so proud to serve year round with Outdoor Buddies all volunteer organization!

We could only do this through the great support of foundations like the White foundation and AVHunter as well as companies such as Bass Pro/Cabalas and Scheel’s!

If you would like to donate to Outdoor Buddies, please go to Outdoorbuddies.org

God bless you all,

Letter From Outdoor Buddies President, Larry Sanford

Wow! I can’t believe it is hunting season already! Thanks to all of the hard work of our Hunt Committee Outdoor Buddies folks have their big game tags in their pockets and are making plans to go on their Outdoor Buddies hunts!

Sat. Sept. 28th we have our shoot from a vehicle sighting at Meadow Springs, where everyone is getting ready for the Pronghorn season starting on Oct.5!

If you have a unit 009 pronghorn license and you are planning to go hunting Oct 5th through the 13th make sure you contact our hunt committee head person Larry Sanford 970-218-5356 and make plans!

We always need volunteers to help on this large week-long pronghorn hunt so please give Larry a call or text and come on out! You are all welcome to camp out there as well!

Also the two days we NEED VOLUNTEERS the most are Friday Oct.4th at 2pm and Sun. Oct. 13th for setup and tear down!

Guys, I encourage all of you that want to volunteer whether you would like to help on location in the field or if you have other skills like running a boat or have skills that we could use as a director on our board feel free to contact myself, Larry Sanford, or one of our board members!

Outdoor Buddies has been growing by leaps and bounds with our new and current programs which we are very proud of! We have a permanent home at 4927 east CR 36 Fort Collin’s CO. I know my late friend and executive director of Outdoor Buddies Dwaine Robey would be so proud we were able to make happen!

Our main fundraisers are our sporting clay shoot in the first week of August and our Raffle program, where we have five or more tremendous raffles for folks to donate to ODB and try to win!

I would say some of our needs are more big game hunting properties so we can take even more disable individuals and veterans! Especially for DEER AND ELK!

We are coming up on December, which is typically the month folks do most of their donating such as our long time supporters like Diane and Roger Harris who blessed us with 8,500.00 yet again this year!

If you are wanting to make a donation, go to Outdoorbuddies.org where we appreciate your donation to our all volunteer 501c3 organizations!

If you are interested in an hunt over in Africa please call me ASAP cause we have an outfitter owner from Africa that never donates hunts but have blessed Outdoor Buddies with this hunt for the second time! It is for a couple zebra and a couple other animals for two hunters! It’s worth 7,000.00 and they are donating every dime of what the hunters pay to Outdoor Buddies! If you have ever wanted to do an African hunt then get ahold of me and we can make it happen!

For all of you disabled folks, youth and veterans—we need your continued support as well! It doesn’t count for anything for outdoor buddies to work so hard to put these events if you don’t come out to them! They are FREE of charge! Let me know what you want to do more of and we will do it!

God bless you all and your family and friends!

Remember it takes a lot of work to ‘hate’ but it is so easy to be “kind” so go around with a smile on your face and kindness in your heart! If we want to change this world around it starts with us first!

Recipe: Smoked Lake Trout

Credit: honest-food.net

This recipe is designed for a fatty fish of between 5 and 15 pounds, something that can be butterflied or kited and then smoked whole. Lake trout are ideal for this because they are the right size and are very fatty. There are other fish you could use with this recipe: Bluefish, larger mackerel, big brown or rainbow trout, or small salmon such as sockeye or pinks.

Ingredients

  • 1 whole lake trout, butterflied or kited
  • Kosher salt, about 90 grams or 3 ounces, about 1/2 cup
  • 1/2 cup chopped spruce tips or fir, or fresh rosemary
  • Grated zest of an orange or 2 lemons or limes

Directions

  1. Salt both sides of the trout liberally. Use the whole 1/2 cup for a fish that, when it was alive, weighed between 5 and 12 pounds. Scale the salt up or down if your fish is larger or smaller, but don't get all hung up on it -- this is an approximation. Sprinkle the chopped spruce tips all over the meat side of the trout. Fold the trout over on itself so it's "back to normal." Put the fish in a closed container and set in the fridge for as many hours as the butterflied fish weighs.
  2. Rinse off the cure under cold water and pat the fish dry with paper towels. Let it sit out in a cool, breezy place for a few hours, or you can set the trout on a cooling rack in the fridge for up to a day. This dries the fish out enough to form a pellicle; if you skip this step the smoke will not adhere to it as well.
  3. Smoke the trout over whatever wood you want. We used diamond willow in Manitoba, but alder is my wood of choice for fish. Fruit woods and oak are other good choices. Smoke over low heat -- no higher than 225°F and ideally closer to 180°F -- until the fish has been cooked through, which can take as little as 90 minutes or as long as 4 hours, depending on how thick your trout is and how hot your fire is. Either eat the trout on the spot or let it cool and eat it cold. It should keep for a solid week to 10 days if kept cool.
