We are really looking forward to continuing to provide some fun and educational content, special event notifications and the ability to keep you up to date on what's going on here at Viscount! With St. Patrick’s Day right around the corner, Irish Whisky, Guinness and beers enhanced with green food coloring are standard options when looking to festively quench one’s thirst. For those looking to deviate from the typical path, look no further than Albariño, or Alvarinho, as it is known in Portugal, for a wine with a strong connection to the Emerald Isle.

The Galicia region of Spain, where Rias Baixas is located, has undeniable ties to Celtic history. Galicia is often referred to as the 7^th Celtic Nation, alongside Ireland, Wales, Scotland, the Isle of Man, Cornwall and Brittany. During the Middle-Ages Irish monks played an important role in the early agricultural and religious development of Galicia. These cultural connections, combined with the shared cool, coastal climates, create a natural link between Albariño and Ireland. In addition to the historical connection, Albariño pairs perfectly with seafood dishes such as oysters, smoked Salmon and fish chowder, all staples in Irish cuisine. The versatility of Albariño extends to heartier dishes as well. Corned beef and cabbage, as well as Irish stews, are complimented and balanced by the crisp, citrusy minerality typically found in these wines. Another region where this grape is prevalent is the Portuguese region of Vinho Verde, which literally translates to Green Wine. What could be more Irish than that? Unfortunately, the wine is not actually green, as the moniker refers to the lush greenness of the region; nothing a drop or two of food coloring can’t fix. In closing, when the day celebrating the patron saint of Ireland rolls around this year, why not buck tradition? Replace that green beer with a green wine and see what Albariño/Alvarinho has to offer.

Silkie Irish Whiskey Inspired by Legend

Under soft moonlight, our mermaid comes ashore as a Silkie, at the secluded Silver Strand, on the Donegal Coast.

Gently shedding her seal coat, she reveals her human form – a beautiful dark haired maiden with deep, soulful eyes.

Dancing along the sand, reveling in the freedom she enjoys in both worlds, she is unaware of the young fisherman captivated by her beauty.

She turns, their eyes meet and their love is set.

Our Silkie makes her home with her fisherman but the sea restlessly calls to her drawing her back to the water.

The call becomes so strong that she must leave her love and return to the ocean forever.
