Warrior Wellness Monthly

Cooking and serving with Smokin' Revolver BBQ at BBQ for Vets, a fundraiser for Operation Honor Our Local Veterans.

March always feels like a season of renewal. As the days get a little longer and signs of spring begin to appear, we’re reminded that growth often starts quietly - with small steps, new habits and people willing to walk alongside one another.

At Warrior Spirit, that’s what we see every day. Community members showing up for workshops, peer support, adventure therapy outings and training opportunities - choosing healing, connection and purpose. We are continually humbled by the courage it takes to grow and by the servant hearts we see across this community.

This past month has been full of meaningful moments - from leadership trainings and peer support conversations to community events where people came together to support our local veterans. Every conversation, every class, every shared experience reminds us why this work matters so much.

Thank you for being part of the Warrior Spirit family. Whether you volunteer, partner with us, donate or simply encourage the mission - you are helping create spaces where people can grow stronger, find hope and discover that they are not alone.

With gratitude,

Gabe & Ashley Onofre

Sword to Cross: From Battle to Peace

Veterans understand what it means to follow; trusting leadership, carrying responsibility and living with a sense of mission that doesn’t simply turn off when service ends. This reflection is written with you in mind. It’s a veteran’s story of hearing Jesus say, “Follow Me,” and discovering a path that doesn’t strip away strength or discipline but reshapes them into something deeper and more life-giving. At Warrior Spirit, we walk alongside veterans who are exploring faith, purpose and peace beyond the battlefield. As you read, consider this a quiet invitation to seek Jesus, as we have, and to watch for what’s coming next.

When I first heard Jesus say, “Follow Me,” I heard it with a soldier’s ears. I knew what it meant to follow a man into battle, to trust the one out front, to move when he moved and stand when he stood. My mind was trained for conflict, for scanning the horizon for threats, for staying ready to fight. I carried an inner sword shaped by a world that measures strength by who wins and who loses, who dominates and who submits.

But Jesus did something I never expected. He did not take the sword from my hand to leave me defenseless; He slowly turned it upside down and taught me where true strength comes from. He took the battle language I understood and walked me from the field of war to the hill of the Cross. The One who said, “Follow Me,” did not stay behind the lines issuing commands; He stepped out in front, not into a firefight, but into self‑giving love. He walked ahead of me up the hill where He would save the world, not with a weapon raised, but with His arms open, and invited me to follow Him from Battle to Peace.

There was a time when my mindset was purely military: assess, protect, control, win. I knew how to stay alive, how to harden my heart just enough to keep moving. That mindset had its place in a world of real danger, but it also left me restless, always braced, always ready for the next hit. When Christ began to shape my mind, He did not erase my training; He re-purposed it, teaching me when to stand firm, when to be humble and when to deny myself. He showed me a new General, a new army, a new kind of mission. Little by little, He took me from “fight for your life” to “lose your life and you will find it.” He took me from seeing people as potential threats to seeing them as people He died for. The old reflex was to reach for the sword—defend, argue. control. The new reflex He is forming in me is to reach for the Cross not passively, but in surrender; not retreat, but trust; not dominance, but love expressed through obedience.

That is the journey He has me on: from Sword to Cross, from Battle to Peace; not the peace of avoidance, but the peace that comes from living with the mind of Christ.

SAILING THERAPY | SERVANT LEADERSHIP TRAINING | VETERANS IN SERVICE

There’s something powerful about time on the water with Skeleton Crew Adventures! On March 9th, we shared a beautiful afternoon of sailing with veterans and first responders. The sunshine, steady wind and ocean waves created the perfect space for peer connection and conversation.

March 10th was a wonderful day of Servant Leadership training with the incredible team at The Warriors Refuge. We were honored to begin the first session in a four-part Servant Leadership series with their leadership staff - men and women who serve veterans every day with compassion, humility and purpose.

It was a beautiful day for BBQ & fellowship as Warrior Spirit & Smokin’ Revolver BBQ joined the cooking and serving team at BBQ for Vets - benefiting Operation Honor Our Local Veterans, Inc. and the veterans they serve in Galveston county. Held on March 14, the event brought the community together in support of those who have served - and more than 300 BBQ plates were sold!

Servant Spotlight: Meera Jain, BS, DPS

Integrative Mental Health & Trauma Resolution Specialist, Founder, Mental Wellness Initiative

At Warrior Spirit, we are continually inspired by leaders who are courageously reimagining what mental wellness can look like in our communities. This month, we are honored to highlight Meera Jain, whose work focuses on helping individuals transform anxiety into freedom and joy.

From Survival to Freedom

For Meera, this mission is deeply personal.

She shares that anxiety is not a personal failure or simply a chemical imbalance in the brain, but often a sign pointing toward unresolved experiences and unmet needs. While her work includes mindset awareness - becoming conscious of beliefs, thought patterns and internal narratives - she emphasizes that healing goes far beyond cognitive understanding.

“I know what it feels like to be highly functional on the outside while quietly battling anxious thoughts, self-doubt, emotional turmoil, and a nervous system that never quite feels at ease.”

Her lived experience fuels her work. Trauma, she explains, is not stored only in memory; it is also held in the nervous system and throughout the body. Moving from survival into freedom and joy is not about suppressing symptoms—it is about resolving the imprints beneath them.

Beyond Traditional Psychology

Having worked as an Assistant Clinical Psychologist within the UK’s National Health Service, Meera saw both the value and the limitations of traditional models. Many clients understood why they felt the way they did, yet remained stuck in the same emotional and behavioral cycles. In cases of severe trauma, treatment often centered on symptom management through medication, which can be helpful for short-term stabilization but rarely addresses root causes.

This gap led her to pursue integrative approaches - meditation, mindfulness, breathwork, hypnotherapy and biofield healing therapies - woven together with neuroscience, depth work and archetypal and transpersonal psychotherapies.

From this integration, she developed what she calls Energy-Based Psychotherapy. This approach works simultaneously with the subconscious mind, emotional processes, nervous system regulation, and the biofield - addressing multiple layers of the human experience at once. Rather than focusing solely on managing symptoms or analyzing experiences cognitively, the work seeks to access and resolve the underlying imprints that contribute to anxiety, depression, burnout, unresolved trauma, dissociation and even suicidal ideation.

“Trauma does not live solely in our thoughts or memories; it is held in the nervous system, the cells of the physical body, the energetic body, and the deeper layers of our internal experience.”

As she refined this model, Meera witnessed consistent and often rapid shifts in individuals who had struggled for years. Her experience reinforced a central belief: healing must be holistic. We are not simply minds with thoughts, but integrated beings—physical, emotional, neurological, and conscious. When these systems are addressed together, lasting transformation becomes possible.

What True Resilience Looks Like

Meera hopes more people come to understand that resilience is not about being tough, positive, or unshakeable. True resilience comes from learning how to safely feel emotions, regulate the nervous system and respond to life with flexibility rather than fear. Inner healing is not linear, nor does it mean life becomes struggle-free. Instead, it builds the capacity to meet challenges without losing oneself in the process.

The Birth of Mental Wellness Initiative

As Meera’s work evolved, so did her desire to make these tools more accessible. This vision led her to found Mental Wellness Initiative. Over time, she recognized that many people wanted support but could not afford private services or did not resonate with traditional models. The nonprofit arm of her work allows her to bring practical, science-informed mental wellness education into communities, workplaces, and organizations that might otherwise go without support. The focus is prevention, education, and empowerment - helping individuals develop skills and resources before they reach a breaking point.

Transforming Stress, Anxiety & Burnout

is structured as a 3-step pathway:

  1. Signature Presentation – Introducing the concept of transformation within mental health and restoring hope.
  2. Weekend Training – A trauma-informed program exploring stress, anxiety, and burnout from a neuropsychological perspective, while teaching cognitive skills for self-awareness, emotional regulation, and self-connection.
  3. Weekend Intensive – A deeper experience designed to support profound personal transformation through integrative practices.

The training component was evaluated in partnership with Brigham Young University and demonstrated 10 measurable outcomes related to emotional regulation, stress resilience and overall mental wellness. This community-centered model is scalable and designed to meet people where they are while still honoring the depth required for lasting transformation.

In addition to the Transforming Stress, Anxiety & Burnout program, Meera also hosts a FREE Online Healing Circle grounded in trauma-informed wisdom and psycho-spiritual insight. This welcoming space allows participants to breathe, reset their nervous systems, reconnect with themselves and remember they are not alone. Through guided practices and reflection, participants deepen self-awareness, better understand their emotional patterns, and gently explore areas of life that may be out of alignment with their true selves. The Healing Circle meets Tuesday evenings at 7:30 pm CT and is open to anyone who wishes to join.

Current Needs & How to Connect

As a grassroots nonprofit, Mental Wellness Initiative’s greatest needs right now are visibility, partnerships, board members and support from aligned donors and sponsors who believe in prevention and proactive mental wellness. Financial contributions, sponsorships and in-kind support will help expand programming into communities that need it most.
