World Communion and Neighbors in Need Sunday

On Sunday Nov. 6 we will celebrate the world wide nature of the Christian Church, yes diverse but also united in following in the way, the truth, and the life of Jesus. We will also be dedicating the Neighbors in Need Offering (and if you haven't had a chance to gift to NIN, please know that you can do so at any time of the year). The NIN offering this year is dedicated to "Mental Health Justice for All". So in preparation for Sunday, I invite you to consider praying for a nation or a peoples in our world where there is suffering of some kind. Remembering that where there is suffering, mental health is often also challenged. Say specific prayers for this nation/people for the coming days. I hope this prayer can be useful in your prayer time:

O Holy One who invites ALL who are weary to come and find rest, we the weary have heard your invitation. Rarely have we needed rest and your unifying Holy Spirit more than we do on this World Communion Sunday. We are exhausted by bitter partisan politics that divide families and friends. Empower me to be an ambassador of kindness and agent of compassion to every person I meet.

We are tired of natural disasters and pray for their victims, most recently those suffering from Hurricane Helene. We also pray for those suffering from natural disaster in other countries, such as _______________.

On World Communion Sunday we rejoice as the barriers of race, gender, and age disappear as Christians around the world gather at one table. We are neither Republican nor Democrat, female nor male, black, brown, yellow, red or white. We are one race – the human race—one body sharing one common loaf.

We go to worship not because we deserve to be there, but because we need to be there. Around the global table we speak different languages and have different customs; but through the transforming power of the Holy Spirit we are ALL one and for as long as we remember who we are and whose we are we carry that holy sense of community with us.

Today, I pray especially for the nation/people of _______________. Hear my prayers O God in the name of Jesus who taught us how to live, how to build community and how to pray. Amen.

The Second Spiritual Gift of Waiting: Loss of Control

Our Book Group met last Sunday for a wonderful conversation about the book, Seven Spiritual Gifts of Waiting (by Holly W. Whitcomb). This week our focus was on when one is feeling a 'loss of control'! In addition to sharing our own experiences, we reflected on the Serenity Prayer and how it can be a resource for us when life is 'out of control'. If you would like to know more, check out this resource for the entire prayer written by United Church of Christ theologian Reinhold Niebuhr: https://proactive12steps.com/serenity-prayer/.

If you would like to learn more about how to use the Serenity Prayer not only as a prayer, but as a proactive call to mindful action to help us cultivate serenity, courage, and wisdom during the 'out of control' moments of our lives, check out this short article:

We missed those who were unable to be there, and welcome any newcomers, whether or not you've read the chapter. If you would like to join the group and want the book, contact Pastor Karla! Next week we will reflect on the spiritual gifts of "Living in the Present" while we are waiting for . . . . whatever in our life is making us wait!

This year's CROP Walk is Sunday, October 20. We will again join up with our sister church - First UCC in Belleville, 130 E. Church Street. Registration is from 12:30 to 1:00 pm. The 3/4 mile walk begins at 1pm from First UCC, Belleville.

Walkers and non-walkers are invited to pledge money per mile or just a flat amount to Zwingli UCC Paoli CROP walkers (make checks payable to CWS-CROP and put in the offering plate, mail to the church, or give to Kriss Ace)! 25% of donations will go to the Belleville Food Pantry. If you have questions, contact Kriss at 608-575-3355. Thanks for your support whether walking, pledging or just in spirit to this greater community cause to end hunger!!
