Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.’ I Thessalonians 4:13–14 NIVUK

Across millennia, humanity has responded to death with burial rituals, poetry, music, monuments and art. We create because absence demands a language, and love refuses to become silence.

In Mexico’s Día de Muertos, photographs, marigolds, food and stories make remembrance communal. For migrant families, these traditions bridge the distances that death and borders have made painfully real. Yet cultural hospitality demands more than simply admiring beautiful customs. It asks whose memories are honoured, whose voices shape our celebrations, and whether welcoming another tradition might also transform our own.

Paul does not tell the Thessalonians not to grieve. He writes to a community troubled by the deaths of people they loved, uncertain whether those who had died would share in Christ’s promised future. His answer is not an explanation of death, but a promise of belonging: those who have died are not forgotten by God. Christian hope does not silence sorrow; it gives us the courage to carry it together.

We are part of the communion of saints, which reminds us that death does not erase our belonging to one another. The lives of those who came before us continue to shape our own through the stories we tell, the traditions we inherit and the love we pass on. When we gather to remember, we do more than honour the past: we make room for one another’s sorrow, celebrate lives that mattered and bear witness to a love that death cannot entirely silence.

This week, we invite you to make space for remembrance, gratitude and hope through two celebrations:

Today, Wednesday 28 October, join us for Día de Muertos, beginning with children’s activities at 6.00 pm, followed by bilingual worship at 7.15 pm and Cafecito en Comunidad, a time to gather, share and enjoy one another’s company.

On Sunday 1 November, we will gather for All Saints Sunday, remembering those who have gone before us, lighting candles in their memory and celebrating Holy Communion.

Saints, come as you are. Bring your memories and traditions, your tears and questions, your gratitude and hope. Bring the names you still whisper, the stories you long to tell and all the love that remains. Together, let us make room for grief, give thanks for lives that have touched our own and find strength in the promise that death does not have the final word.
