SAVE YOUR PHOTOS DAY

Save Your Photos Day is always on a Saturday in September. This is a great day to back up those digital photos and organize all those boxes of Polaroids.

As part of Save Your Photos Month, the day reminds us these precious memories are perishable. Whether through natural disasters like floods, fires, or tornados or the human ones like spilled liquids and computer viruses, photos in any form are fragile. Backing them up and preserving them is necessary for the long haul.

Some of the older photographs that have made it this far may be missing vital information. Many of our grandparents didn't take the time to write the names of the people in the pictures, never realizing that generations later would be as fascinated by the people in the images as they were by taking them.

There are several ways to create order from the chaos. Take charge of the modern photos now. Label as you go by including names, dates, and information about the event on the picture. Back up the digital photos regularly. Share your favorites and display those that bring a smile.

When it comes to tracking down information on old family pictures, start with relatives. There may be someone who knows someone with a long memory. Take a road trip with your photographs for a visit. Connect through ancestry and family tree websites. Some of the oddest things will help connect one photo to another.

NATIONAL GHOST HUNTING DAY

On the last Saturday in September, as part of the World's Largest Ghost Hunt, National Ghost Hunting Day kicks off an annual international investigation of the paranormal.

Ghost hunting stirs up images of abandoned mansions with murderous histories. For others, ghost hunting involves specters guarding ancient crypts. Centuries-old ghost stories around the world focus on historical records or literature. Science, religion, and academia debate their existence. Even their use by Shakespeare and other playwrights is often considered a continuation of that discussion.

Legendary Ghosts

Seeking paranormal activity isn't limited to crumbling ruins and darkened, forgotten corners of the world. Public places boast eerie tales of spectral voices or haunting mists. For example, both the Tower of London and the White House in Washington, D.C. crackle with the electricity of paranormal activity. The former is thought to be haunted by Ann Boleyn's ghost. With regards to the White House, the stories are plentiful, too.

Enthusiasts bring attention to historic properties. They also have an interest in preservation. As part of the adventure, sleuths visit Civil War-era towns like Old-Salt Sulphur Springs, Virginia. Others join ghost walks like the one at Rohs Opera House in Kentucky. For train lovers and train-loving ghosts, hop on board in Colorado. There are many historical locations ready for sleuthing and investigation on National Ghost Hunting Day.

Perhaps it's the anticipation for the novice - someone yet to experience the thrill of witnessing a restless soul making contact for the first time. Lured into their first haunted journey, the novice remembers the first spooky ghost story read by flashlight under the bedsheets. Or perhaps it was an unexplained blur on a snapshot. Sometimes, just the prospect of a spirit lingering nearby piques the investigator's interest. However, actual sightings are rare and fleeting.

Modern Ghost Hunts

With the increase of movies and television shows going on the hunt, interest grows. Societies worldwide continue developing methods of proving the existence of ghosts, spirits, and other paranormal activity. Typically, a ghost hunting team attempts to collect evidence they see as supportive of paranormal activity. Devices such as an EMF meter, digital thermometer, handheld, and static digital video cameras, audio recorders, and computers are all part of a team's toolbox. However, they also employ traditional techniques like conducting interviews and researching the history of a site.

NATIONAL PARANORMAL DAY - May 3

Of course, skeptics remain. Considered a pseudoscience by most educators, academics, and science writers, ghost hunting leads to noble acts. For example, some ghost hunts launched preservation campaigns. They also preserve the American Folklore Story and integrate known scientific tools for challenging dimensional theories. Thus, with a tremendous sense of discovery and enthusiasm, National Ghost Hunting Day is celebrated.

Say It Isn't So, Another Tropical Threat In Gulf For Late Next Week?!!!

Here we go again, computer models hinting something will form that is not there yet. Sound familiar? It should since models had Helene forming 7-10 days in advance. This time, the models are not as bullish at developing a strong system like they were with Helene. However, since we have been in the favorable phase (rising motion) of the MJO, we cannot ignore, we are still no where near the end of this hurricane season!

by Tennessee Williams
It’s Tennessee Williams as you’ve never seen him as these unhinged vignettes probe the macabre corners of the human psyche. Wacky, weird, and wild desire splatters in all directions on the stage as three of Williams’ most outrageous stories come to life in a one-of-a-kind choose-your-own-adventure night of curiosities and creeps. Not for kids and not for the faint of heart!

NATIONAL DRINK BEER DAY

National Drink Beer Day toasts that malty elixir on September 28. Just as the Oktoberfest season comes to an end, the day reminds us to enjoy the world's most popular adult beverage.

Beer lovers have more selection than ever before in the ale and lager market. An explosion in the craft beer industry keeps the competition and the flavors robust, churning out new flavors seasonally. Beer connoisseurs quench their thirst with flavors drastically different from their grandfather's beers. Rootbeer to raspberry, caramel, and hints of herbs all tickle the palate when it comes to artisanal beers.

However, you don't have to drink a special brew to celebrate the day. Drink your favorite stand by or branch out - whichever you prefer. Around the country, and from around the world, a wide assortment of beers offers plenty of ways to celebrate. Whether you call your mug full of brew a barley pop or cerveza, the day is worth celebrating.

NATIONAL STRAWBERRY CREAM PIE DAY | SEPTEMBER 28

Each year on September 28 strawberry lovers get to enjoy their favorite fruit in the form of pie on National Strawberry Cream Pie Day.

Even though strawberries are out of season, the grocers always make sure to stock up on frozen and canned so we can make pies. How else do we keep making fruit pies all year long? Those of us who planned ahead preserved strawberries just for this occasion. And of course, some fresh ones are still available here and there.

Strawberry cream pie can be made in many different ways. Some recipes use a custard or pudding base with strawberries either folded in or on top. Others are made with cream cheese or whipped cream. Whichever you prefer, the strawberry cream pie is a delicious treat.

City of New Orleans Announces New Dates to Register to Become Eligible to Participate in Set-Aside Program

NEW ORLEANS – The City of New Orleans recently announced the launch of the Set-Aside Program to enhance opportunities for disadvantaged business enterprises (DBEs).  The Set-Aside Program allows the City of New Orleans to allocate up to 25 percent of its contracts for specific procurement of goods, services, and construction work to socially and economically disadvantaged businesses. This initiative ensures that certified DBEs can compete for designated contracts among themselves, rather than against larger or prime contractors.

The Set-Aside Program aims to catalyze long-term growth and energize local businesses through building wealth for minority entrepreneurs and small businesses. The program also levels the playing field for DBE owners who wish to do business with the City of New Orleans, allowing them to have a fair chance.

Currently, there are 2,105 DBEs that have obtained their certification. Information regarding the Set-Aside Program has been disseminated via email to all certified DBEs. However, only a fraction have registered on the City’s BRASS database, the supplier portal that allows vendors to receive solicitations, upload invoices, set up direct deposit, and view and print payment information. The criteria to participate include previous establishment as a certified DBE and BRASS registration through the City's supplier portal.

For assistance with BRASS registration, vendors can call the Bureau of Purchasing at (504) 658-1550. In addition, staff will be on hand to assist City certified DBEs with registering on the BRASS supplier portal on the following dates:

Nickel-A-Dance Fall 2024 Season to Begin on Frenchmen Street

by: OffBeat Staff

The fall 2024 season of Nickel-A-Dance, a beloved free traditional jazz concert series, is set to begin on September 29. For over three decades, Nickel-A-Dance has brought live jazz to the public, offering an afternoon of family-friendly entertainment on Sundays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. This year, the series moves to a new location at Favela Chic, located at 525 Frenchmen Street, continuing its tradition on this famous music corridor.

Originally started in 1994, Nickel-A-Dance has become a staple for fans of New Orleans jazz who may not frequent nightclubs. It attracts a diverse crowd, including children, families, and seniors, all coming together to celebrate traditional jazz as America’s original dance music. This fall’s lineup will feature some of the city’s most renowned jazz musicians.

The season kicks off on September 29 with trumpeter Kevin Louis and The Palm Court Jazz Band. Louis, a New Orleans native and graduate of the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA), has toured internationally and performed with legends such as Jimmy Heath and the Duke Ellington Orchestra. He brings The Palm Court Jazz Band, previously a fixture at the now-closed Palm Court Jazz Café, to the stage for a lively opening night.

On October 6, Nickel-A-Dance will host Duke Heitger and The Crescent City Joymakers. Heitger, a classic jazz trumpeter known for his virtuosity, has performed internationally and is a long-standing performer on the Steamboat Natchez. His band is a staple of Nickel-A-Dance and promises a night of spirited traditional jazz.

Next, on October 13, Mark Braud and His Sunday Night All-Stars will take the stage. Braud, part of the musical Brunious and Santiago families, has been a fixture in the New Orleans jazz scene since his youth. He has performed with Harry Connick Jr., Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and many other notable artists. His band will bring a blend of traditional jazz and contemporary flair to the series.

Lars Edegran and The Palm Court Jazz All-Stars are set to perform on October 20. Edegran, originally from Sweden, has been a New Orleans resident since 1966 and is known for his versatility on piano, guitar, and banjo. He has worked with jazz greats like Earl Hines and George Lewis, and his band will showcase the best of New Orleans traditional jazz.

The fall series will conclude on October 27 with Gregg Stafford and The Jazz Hounds. Stafford, a respected trumpeter and vocalist, has led several prominent New Orleans jazz bands, including Danny Barker’s Jazz Hounds and the Young Tuxedo Brass Band. He has dedicated his career to preserving the musical traditions of New Orleans and remains an active figure in the city’s jazz community.

Historic BK House and Garden's Soiree in the Vieux Carre-Sunday, September 29, 2024 | 5:00 – 8:00 PM

Please join us as the sun sets over Chartres Street for our annual Soirée in the Vieux Carré.

This year’s event is sure to be magical with music by John Boutté and Amber Rachelle & The Sweet Potatoes and a delicious Sunday supper by 12 Seasons Catering & Events.

Each year, our annual fundraiser supports a major capital improvement project, ensuring the long-term viability and versatility of the site. This year’s fundraiser will support major restorations to interior plaster and masonry.

We are pleased to be honoring our generous patron, the late Avis Ogilvy-Moore, whose bequest has allowed BK House to set up an Endowment fund, ensuring the long-term viability of the organization.

The Historic BK House & Gardens is a National Historic Landmark built in 1826. This architectural treasure is an outstanding example of a raised center hall villa and includes both Creole and American features in an elaborately detailed residence. BK House’s diverse history includes the stories of those who both lived and labored here for nearly 200 years, offering a unique educational experience to visitors, which furthers the understanding of New Orleans history. The house, parterre garden and lovely courtyard have been featured in several films and television shows and are favorites for guided tours, weddings, and special events.

Join the award-winning (1st place, baby!) NOLA Jitterbugs for a 6-week series with live music in the last class!

Our live music classes with local musicians and culture bearers, as well as our overall emphasis on music appreciation is what makes our lessons stand out among the rest!

Starts at The Contemporary Arts Center!

6-7pm Intro to Swing

For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.

7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level

This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

No partner required to take either of these classes. Come alone or with friends!

Mon, August 19

(Entry at 7:30 pm)

The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.

Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.

The list of performers? A total mystery.

The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.

How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.

When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.

Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

West Bank Hispanic Heritage Festival Announces Vibrant Music, Food, and Entertainment Lineup

Over 30 entertainment, food, craft, and health vendors participating in the October 12 Hispanic cultural event at UHC

New Orleans– West Bank Hispanic Heritage Festival organizers announced today that over 30 vendors will participate in this year’s inaugural event to bring a day of vibrant music, diverse culinary offerings, and community celebrations to the University of Holy Cross (UHC) campus in Algiers on October 12, 2024, from 11 a.m. - 7 p.m.

This year’s festival, free and open to the public, will have offerings for everyone including a full lineup of music, entertainment for adults and kids, and a large community health event. From live performances to delicious food, the festival is designed to honor Hispanic heritage in an inclusive environment where everyone is welcome.

“Our mission is to bring together people from all backgrounds throughout the city,” said Stephanie Davi McNeely, Chair of the West Bank Hispanic Heritage Festival and the First Lady of the University of Holy Cross. “The festival highlights the diversity of our Hispanic culture through music, food, art and education in a fun, family-friendly and free environment, right in the heart of the UHC campus.”

Live entertainment will keep the crowd energized throughout the day, with performances on the Redmann Law Stage by:

  • La Tran-K Band – An energetic band that will keep the festivities lively with their dynamic tunes.
  • Grupo Sensación – Bringing traditional and contemporary Latin sounds that will keep the crowd dancing.
  • Fermin Ceballos - Performing a mix of modern and traditional Hispanic music.
  • Mariachi Jalisco – Enjoy the classic mariachi tunes that celebrate the heart of Hispanic music.
  • Ballet Folklórico Vive Mi Tierra – Traditional Mexican folk dance performances showcasing vibrant costumes and storytelling through movement.
  • Dile Que NOLA – A local favorite bringing their unique Latin fusion sounds to the stage.
  • ZUMBA with Sonia G Fitness – An energizing Zumba session to get everyone moving.

The Law Office of John Redmann, LLC serves many in the Hispanic community, and their sponsorship of the festival stage is part of their commitment to celebrating the many cultures in our area.

Additionally, a diverse lineup of food vendors and food trucks will offer a taste of authentic Hispanic and local flavors. Festival-goers can indulge in dishes from:

  • Food Vendors: Anita’s Quesabirrias, Casita Jasmyn, Chick Fil A, Coop’s Burgers, El Macho Grill, Curramba La Bella Colombian Food, Hokena’s Cuisine, La Chilanga, Malkriados Kitchen, Mexi-pops by Angie, Mimas Peruvian Dessert, Mimi’s Sweets & Treats, Piece of Kookie, Life Gave Lemons Lemonade, Pistachio Coffee, The Creative Grind, and Waska.
  • Food Trucks: MoFries, Kona Ice of the Crescent City, Travelin’ Tom’s Coffee of Jefferson, Wolf's Burger Truck, and ZoraChristina Catering & Food Truck.

Alongside the entertainment, the West Bank Hispanic Heritage Festival will also host a community health event, offering resources and information to promote wellness among attendees. “Our UHC community is approximately 12 percent Hispanic, and we are excited to showcase not only the strong educational programs and welcoming campus environment that UHC offers, but also hope attendees are able to discover something new about the Hispanic culture that plays such an important role in our community,” said Dr. Stanton McNeely, president of the University of Holy Cross.

For the fourth consecutive year, Louisiana will showcase its vibrant culture in the 2025 Tournament of Rose Parade in Pasadena, California! This year’s float, featuring a Louisiana alligator adorned with beads, a Cajun dance hall, and pots of boiled seafood, perfectly captures the essence of a “Louisiana Saturday Night.” Plus, enjoy mid-parade entertainment by rising country star Timothy Wayne!

We can’t wait to share Louisiana’s celebratory spirit and unique culture with the world once again.
