SUCCESS:
By Uniting Major Players, 400 Reentrants Served at Job Fair
Back in December, UNITE INDY joined with Indianapolis Parole District 3 (PD3) and employers willing to offer a second chance to put together a job fair where about 70 reentrants were connected with jobs. This month, with many more major players collaborating, we were able to serve 400 reentrants who were unemployed or underemployed after release from incarceration.
Eighteen different employers with openings for good-paying jobs conducted interviews on the spot. Also on hand were 23 resource providers (legal, financial literacy, healthcare, advanced certifications, food, clothing, and more). Free haircuts and massages were provided.
Long after the job fair, employment will elevate everyone in the employee's household. It will reestablish the wage earner as a valuable member of the family, bring back self-respect, improve the family's quality of life, and positively impact their neighborhood. WOMEN IN CLASS:
Jobs for Life Training Kicks Off in Shelby County
UNITE INDY'S Doug Evans (pictured below) and Scott Whiting ran the first Shelby County Jobs for Life (JfL) training session last week for a group of energized, involved women now living outside the Shelby County Jail but under the supervision of the county's Community Corrections. The reception from the class surpassed our team's expectations. JfL training encourages conversations about our journeys through life, the roadblocks we face, the importance of work, and how we are unconditionally loved by God. Breakout sessions were heartfelt, honest, and sprinkled with laughter and even tears.

JfL students are also taught how to set goals, and begin to assemble the tools needed for successful next steps and how to avoid pitfalls. One student responded, “You have described my life!” Doug (pictured) is more than qualified for his work with UNITE INDY as our primary class facilitator. He taught in prisons all over the state for 40 years and shows his humor, understanding, and love for reentrants as he encourages them to succeed. Classes will continue for 15 more weeks, during which UNITE INDY's SecondChanceIndy.com and JfL graduates' mentors will connect them with employers for the next step in their journey to independence.

Sign On To Help Stop Predatory Lending In Indiana and the Nation
UNITE INDY is part of a growing movement to end predatory lending which feeds on the most vulnerable in our society. High-cost, unaffordable forms of credit are marketed as lifelines to consumers and small businesses, but predatory products do not provide access to affordable credit. Instead, they lead to financial ruin by trapping borrowers in high-cost loans and devastating cycles of debt that leave them far worse off.
These lenders use exorbitant interest rates, fees, add-on products, and unaffordable balloon payments to line their pockets and keep even working families in poverty.

Letters Keep Coming In! Could These Inmates Be Writing To You?
In some Central Indiana prisons and county jails, UNITE INDY is known for its army of caring correspondents. Word travels fast in an institution for the forgotten, where loneliness is a natural response to being separated from everyone you know. There are a lot of good souls who have made mistakes, and are simply hoping for someone to be a friend. Right now we have three new people who would love to have someone to connect with...Could it be you? If you can encourage and share small joys, this might just be the good work you have been waiting for. We'll connect you and provide you with all the help and direction you'll need. Many churches are starting teams of their own! For more information, email Sara, our Inmate Correspondent Team Leader, or check out this volunteer opportunity.

NANCY'S BLOG POST:
What We Choose In Times of Fear
It’s a scary time in our country. We’ve cooked up a big old fear cocktail, made with a bottle of violence, a mixer of economic problems and a couple shots of distrust. Our nerves are jangled. In the past few years we’ve gone through a pandemic, where masked people fought battles over packages of Charmin as we got required injections, wore masks, and were quarantined in our homes.
Now we are seeing empty shelves, crazy high gas prices, and the highest inflation rates in 50 years. A friend told me his 401K is now only a 201K due to the declining stock market and he is very fearful. I could go on…The list of fears are endless, affecting different folks in different ways, but we’re all wondering where this will end. Read Nancy's blog post here!

How Do We Teach "Jobs for Life" within a High Security Facility?
Good Question! Corrections facilities that house high security inmates will not allow groups of mentors to come in to their secure settings. So, UNITE INDY mentors use technology. We use digital teaching--videos with a combination of teachers, and animated situations that allow students to learn at any time that is convenient for the student and the jail or prison facility. Mentors can be with them via computer tablets, or telephones and individual visits, to talk over the study material and encourage them. The study by The Lacy School of Business at Butler University, Understanding the Relationship between Criminal Record and On-the-job Performance, of which UNITE INDY was a sponsor, shows that these very people make good employees. Plus, getting a good job soon after release, studies show, can drop recidivism to between 3% and 8%. So great news all around!

Why Support UNITE INDY?
Our major focus is to assist the 12,000 inmates returning to Central Indiana after long-term jail sentences. UNITE INDY provides mentored job training inside the jail, and a website for those with a criminal record, SecondChanceIndy.com, filled with job openings offered by our Second Chance employer partners.
These jobs are powerful weapons with which to fight poverty in our neighborhoods.

Support of Ministries and Charities:
Since 2017 UNITE INDY has provided a free web-based system at UNITEINDY.org that connects churches, ministries, and other charities to share their volunteer needs or needed items. UNITE INDY also provides the manpower necessary to assist smaller organizations—that have no one to upload needed items—the help they require to access this service. Through this portal, UNITE INDY has brought hundreds of volunteers and thousands of dollars worth of needed goods into the hands of those who assist the poor.
Serving the Servants:
UNITE INDY comes behind urban pastors and ministry leaders by addressing personal and professional needs with free services for those who work tirelessly in their neighborhoods to care for the needy and bereft.
Remember, almost 1 out of every 3 children in Indianapolis lives below the poverty level, yet even in the aftermath of the COVID shut down, as our economy comes back to life and employment is returning, all this good news stops at the lines surrounding many of our inner city neighborhoods. In some neighborhoods of Marion County unemployment is now 21%, and poverty remains the overwhelming divider of people.
Please donate to UNITE INDY now. There are a number of choices that are all secure and safe. By sending your fully tax deductible gift* now we can have a greater impact meeting needs in our community in 2021.
Many, many thanks!
*UNITE INDY, Inc. is approved under Internal Revenue Code (IRC) Section 501(c)(3) as a Public Charity, donors can deduct contributions they make under IRC Section 170.
