Greetings!

From Community Care to Lasting Change: The History of LGBTQ+ Philanthropy

Long before LGBTQ+ communities received meaningful support from mainstream philanthropy, they found ways to care for one another. Through grassroots fundraising, mutual aid, and community-led organizations, LGBTQ+ people built networks of support when traditional institutions failed to recognize their needs.

Following the Stonewall uprising in 1969, LGBTQ+ organizing expanded, and dedicated philanthropic funds began emerging in the late 1970s and early 1980s through organizations like Stonewall & RESIST. The HIV/AIDS crisis further demonstrated the power of collective care, mobilizing resources for healthcare, advocacy, and direct support. Over time, grassroots generosity grew into a broader philanthropic movement advancing civil rights, health equity, and social change through the creation of massive philanthropic institutions like the Gill Foundation and Arcus Foundation.

Yet access to funding has never been equal. Smaller organizations, rural communities, and LGBTQ+ people across the South have often faced significant barriers to philanthropic investment. These gaps underscore the importance of funding models rooted in local knowledge, community leadership, and trust.

Building a Philanthropic Home for LGBTQ+ Texans

In Texas, this need helped inspire the creation of Texas Pride Community Foundation. Founded in 2015, Texas Pride was established to connect philanthropy with the organizations and leaders strengthening LGBTQ+ communities statewide.

An important early milestone came in 2016, when Funders for LGBTQ Issues awarded Texas Pride a $50,000 planning grant through its Out in the South Fund. Founded in 1982, Funders for LGBTQ Issues works to expand philanthropic resources for LGBTQ+ communities. This early partnership helped make Texas Pride’s statewide IMPACT! Texas LGBTQ Community Needs Assessment possible, providing a foundation for informed, community-centered grant making.

In 2017, Texas Pride conducted the assessment and awarded its first emergency grant. Its annual community grant making program followed in 2018, advancing a statewide vision for reaching LGBTQ+ Texans beyond major metropolitan areas, including rural communities, border regions, and historically under-resourced areas.

Investing in a Future Where LGBTQ+ Texans Thrive

Today, Texas Pride continues to strengthen the network of organizations serving LGBTQ+ Texans through philanthropic investment, partnerships, and support for community leadership. Following its transition to independent operations in January 2025, the foundation entered a new chapter focused on expanding its statewide impact and building long-term sustainability. To date, Texas Pride Community Foundation has invested more than $2.5 million across the state.

At its heart, LGBTQ+ philanthropy is about more than dollars distributed. It is about trusting community leaders, supporting grassroots organizations, and ensuring resources reach those too often overlooked including transgender people, LGBTQ+ people of color, and Texans with limited access to funding and services.

The history of LGBTQ+ philanthropy reminds us that lasting progress begins when people invest in one another. At Texas Pride Community Foundation, we connect generosity with community-driven solutions, helping organizations meet immediate needs while building the capacity to thrive for generations to come.

The future of LGBTQ+ philanthropy depends on what we invest in today. Together, we can build a stronger, more connected, and more sustainable future for LGBTQ+ Texans.

Happy LGBTQ+ History Month!
