Eric Thornton Joins SCAN Circle Preschool Program
Eric Thornton began in the role of Child and Family Advocate at SCAN’s Circle Preschool Program in January 2021. Through this role he spends part of his time in the classroom with children and also plays a critical role in helping children by supporting families of children enrolled in SCAN’s therapeutic Circle Preschool Program. We are thankful to have Eric as part of the Circle Preschool Program and SCAN team.

How did you first get involved with SCAN?
I first became involved with SCAN through my work with Richmond Public Schools as a Bullying Prevention Specialist. Further in my career, I transitioned into a Therapeutic Foster Care Consultant, in which I had a child that was utilizing therapy services with SCAN. From that point, I was able to see a more in-depth look at the work that SCAN provides, and how invested they were in their children and families. I have always admired how the organization fostered its relationships.

What inspires you to stay involved with SCAN?
I love the community outreach and how SCAN strives for equity and inclusion amongst all. The environment is very welcoming and warm.

Is there anything you wish other people knew about SCAN?
I wish people knew about the individual experiences of the staff at SCAN. There is an abundance of knowledge and experience from the staff.

What has been the best experience with SCAN so far?
My best experience has been the transparency and communication on all levels of the organization, as well as opportunities for advancement and involvement.

What are any challenges you have faced in your work with SCAN?
There's never a dull day at Circle Preschool. For some, it may be challenging with the various behaviors, but there's a new learning experience every day!

Are you involved with any other community organizations, hobbies, or activities?
I am family-oriented. I love being with family and participating in many activities. I also like feeding the homeless, participating in community, and social organizing when I am able to. I am also a part of the Equity and Inclusion Committee with SCAN.

This training is open to all members of the community interested in a foundational learning experience around the topics of trauma and resilience.

Participants will learn to define trauma and identify different types of trauma, review the findings of the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Study, and explore the impact of trauma on the brain and behavior. The training also introduces the basics of a trauma-informed approach and the science of building resilience.

First Lady of Virginia Visits SCAN Circle Preschool Program
SCAN's Circle Preschool Program was honored to welcome First Lady of Virginia Pamela Northam in May in celebration of Resilience Week VA! The children presented Mrs. Northam with a book they created about how they like to calm themselves, a card, and some paper flowers they made.

Thank you to Pam Northam and her team for taking the time to visit our preschoolers and talk with them!

Thank you to Girls on the Run (Twin Hickory Heart & Sole team) for donating kindness rocks for SCAN's outdoor space and completing a painting project!
