Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Our gratitude for our Director of Music, Dr. Joung-A Yum, the talented vocal ensemble she assembled, pianist, and to our guest cellist, Mitchell Lyon for a deeply moving evening of prayer and music observing the Jubilee Year of Hope. In four parts, the music offered reflections on Scripture passage we read together. It was an expression of our hope in the Lord to bring peace and hope to our world and city.

Our Pilgrimage on July 12th to the Mission Buenaventura and our Jubilee Concert will also be special times of prayer, not only for reconciliation, but also for peace and hope for our sisters and brothers living in fear of mass deportation and separation from their families. We will depart by bus around 8am. At the Mission, Dr. Ruben Mendoza, Professor of Archaeology specializing in the Missions and California History will offer a tour then we'll celebrate mass along with an opportunity for individual reconciliation. After lunch, we'll head back to LA, returning at approximately 2:30 or 3pm.

As we prepare to celebrate our nation's Independence Day, we will begin a year of toward the celebration of America’s 250th anniversary and the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.

I would like to quote, Archbishop Gomez's letter calling for a national conversation on immigration:

"The ideals expressed in the Declaration, not our military power, have always been what make America great."

"Ours is the first nation founded on principles rooted in the Jewish and Christian Scriptures, the truth that all men and women are created equal, with God-given dignity and rights that can never be denied by any government."

"America’s founders called these truths “self-evident.” Over the years, our leaders’ commitment has made this nation a beacon of hope for those seeking freedom and refuge from oppression."

Even as the Church teaches that a nation has the obligation to regulate immigration for the common good (Catechism, 2241), mass deportations do not serve the common good. They damage the human dignity of immigrants and refugees by causing them to live in fear of carrying on with daily life, from working, shopping, medical care, to gathering for worship. To rip people from their lives, many who have worked, and contributed to the common good for decades is particularly cruel.

For many years, our political leaders of all parties have poorly regulated immigration, looking only to enforcement as a substitute for just and fair policies which insure the common good and acknowledge the gift of immigration, which is an essential part of our national identity.

May our observance this year lead to deeper reflection on the plight of our sisters and brothers threatened with mass deportation and separation from their families and friends.

God of justice, Father of truth, who guide creation

in wisdom and goodness to fulfillment in Christ your Son,

open our hearts to the truth of his Gospel,

that your peace may rule in our hearts and

your justice guide our lives.

- Collect Prayer from the Mass for Independence Day

Happy 4th of July!

Called to Renew Church Renovation

The renovation project, which includes the refurbishments of the pew and kneelers, new flooring, wood paneling refurbishment, new lighting, and painting of the church is slated for completion on August 15th, God willing. All masses are held in the John Carroll Parish Center (JCPC), which is the original church, dedicated in 1932. With the construction of the new Church in 1958, this original church became the Parish Center.

Our 'new' church was designed by the architectural firm of Chaix and Johnson and Charles A. O'Grady, Associate; Brandow & Johnston were the Structural Engineers; and the Theisen Company served as building contractors.

On the church facade, above the main church entrance doors is the sculpture of Saint Paul the Apostle at his conversion (Acts of the Apostles 9). Paul's encounter with the Risen Christ is our parish feast day, January 25th. He is kneeling, shielding his eyes from a blinding light from which Jesus speaks to him.

Saint Paul is often depicted with a sword representing the instrument of his martyrdom. Like the cross of Jesus, the instruments of martyrdom have no power over death. The sword also recalls a passage attributed to Paul's close associates and captures the character of his many writings, and is found in the Letter to the Hebrews (4:12): "For the word of God is living and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, even penetrating as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart."

Local sculptor Stephen Zakian created the image of the Conversion of Paul. Zakian earned his M.F.A. from the University of Southern California in 1952, and later became a Professor of Fine Arts at USC.
