A New Approach to the New Year:

Setting Intentions Instead of Resolutions

Hello Beautiful Soul,

Usually by the end of January, traditional New Year's resolutions have created more stress than positive change.

In my practice, I've seen how resolutions can become another form of self-criticism, becoming a source of anxiety rather than motivation.

People carry the weight of "failed" resolutions throughout the year like unwanted baggage.

I suggest a more compassionate approach: setting intentions rather than resolutions.

Intentions honor who you are now, while gently guiding who you’re becoming.

By setting intentions that reflect who you want to become rather than what you want to achieve, you can create meaningful, lasting change that resonates with your values and your heart.

This year, let go of the pressure to achieve a specific outcome and, instead, focus on the kind of person you want to be.

Whether it's nurturing compassion, practicing mindfulness, or creating better health, your intentions will help guide you toward a more purposeful and fulfilling life.

Consider the difference:

Resolutions

Resolutions are often specific, rigid commitments that focus on achieving specific outcomes.

They are often framed as "fixing" something about ourselves or our lives.

"I will lose 30 pounds."

"I will quit smoking."

"I will get my dream job."

Intentions

Intentions, on the other hand, focus on how you want to feel, and the kind of person you want to be.

They are about directing our energy and attention toward desired ways of being rather than specific outcomes.

They're like a compass, rather than a destination - guiding our choices while allowing for multiple paths forward.

"I intend to cultivate self-compassion and be kinder to myself."

"I intend to embrace mindfulness and be more present in my daily life."

"I intend to nurture my body and prioritize healthy habits."

"I intend to approach challenges with patience and curiosity."

"I intend to practice active listening and understanding in my relationships."

Setting Meaningful Intentions

Start Your Day with a Morning Ritual

One of the best times to set intentions is first thing in the morning.

Take a moment to ask yourself, “What is my intention for today?”

Use these prompts to help set your intention, as you think about the people and activities you will face.

Ask yourself:

"How might I show up today to have the best impact?"

"What quality of mind do I want to strengthen and develop?"

"What do I need to do to take better care of myself?"

"During difficult moments, how might I be more compassionate to others and myself?"

"How might I feel more connected and fulfilled?"

Use Visual Reminders

Create reminders on sticky notes in visible spots such as your mirror, your desk, your wallet, etc.

Wear a bracelet or piece of jewelry that symbolizes your intention.

Use a journal dedicated to your intentions and carry it with you.

Write a letter to yourself outlining your intentions and re-read it regularly.

Write down inspiring quotes and affirmations that align with your intentions.

Create a vision board with images that represent what you want for yourself in the upcoming weeks or months and hang it in your home or office.

Turn Intentions into Small Actions

Intentions come to life through small, consistent actions.

Ask yourself, "What small action steps can I take that will align with my intentions?"

For example, if your intention is to reduce stress, you might set the action of taking a walk, or practicing breathing exercises during the day.

If your intention is to be more mindful of your eating, you might set the action of meal-planning your entire day's menu.

By linking your intention to a concrete action, you’re more likely to follow through and set yourself up for success.

Reflect Regularly During the Day

Throughout the day, check in with yourself.

Pause, take a breath, and revisit your intention.

Simply observe, as you become more and more conscious of your intentions for each day, how the quality of your communications, relationships, and mood shifts.

Ask yourself, "How am I doing with my intention today?"

If you’ve gotten off track, just reset and refocus.

End Your Day with Gratitude

At the end of the day, spend a few minutes reflecting on how your intentions played out.

Did you stick to them?

How did they make you feel?

Even if the day didn’t go perfectly, celebrate the small wins and acknowledge your efforts.

This practice not only reinforces your intentions, but also helps you go to bed with a positive mindset.

Celebrate your progress, and acknowledge the shifts you are making along the way.

Take time to recognize the ways in which you are embodying your intentions.

Journaling, meditating, or simply taking a moment to pause and reflect can help you stay grounded and grateful for the journey.

Be Kind to Yourself

Intentions are about embracing the journey.

Remember that setting intentions isn’t about being perfect - it’s about staying mindful and making conscious choices that align with how you want to feel.

If you stray from the path, just guide yourself back to your intention and keep going.

Every day is a new opportunity to practice, grow, and get closer to your goals.

When you set intentions, you're not just checking off boxes - you're creating a road map that aligns with the life you want to live.
