Dear Boston Workers Circle community,

As we approach Election Day on November 3, we are thinking of you and extending our heartfelt wishes for ease and safety as we enter a time of hope and uncertainty. This election represents both great potential for positive change, and fears about the future of our country and communities. We want to assure you that the BWC board and staff are continuing to monitor the political situation, informed by our partner organizations, in order to share timely, accurate information.

Since our founding, the Workers Circles identified voting as one tactic among many that members with US citizenship can take to advance “political freedom and economic equality.” We encourage all our members who are eligible to vote to make a plan to do so, whether it be by mail, during early voting, or on Election Day. Make sure you know where your polling location is, create a plan for transportation, and check in with family, friends, and neighbors to make sure they have plans too. Additionally, our Shabes Committee has planned an After-the-Vote Shabes which will take place on Friday, November 6 from 6-8 pm at the BWC building. Register here to join us as we come together to process the results as a community.

Part of our pre-election monitoring has included communicating and collaborating with unions, organizations, and congregations who are working on building a broad coalition committed to defending the election and ensuring that all eligible voters vote, that all votes are counted, and that all duly elected candidates are seated at inauguration.

To do this, our coalition must turn out in large numbers to ensure that any attempts against these efforts are met with overwhelming public outcry as we put pressure on electeds and other centers of power to comply with the law and defend our democracy. We are in direct communication with the labor unions who will make the final call on for a nonviolent mass mobilization at an agreed upon, T-accessible location, and if we receive the call, we will then inform the community and provide further instructions. To this end, we are taking several steps to support this vital coalitional work:

  1. Fill out our pledge to let us know you’re committed to turning out. This will allow you to join our announcement-only Signal group where you can receive rapid response updates on mobilization. This will be our main method of sharing time-sensitive information after the call is made..
  2. Brainstorm 5 other members of the community who you can reach out to now to let them know we’re prepping to mobilize, share what they can to do get ready, and commit to alerting them if the call to mobilize is made.
  3. Prepare your kit for mobilization: make sure you have comfortable shoes and clothes, find your weather-related clothing like raincoats, and prepare a water bottle, sunscreen, snacks, and a mask if you choose. If you are planning to bring your phone, here are some preparations you can consider to manage risk.

There is much to be hopeful for: we are part of a powerful coalition here in the Boston area that is connected to efforts across the state and the entire country who are coordinating to defend our democracy. Our people power is significant, and its only limit is how many people we can turn out to the mass mobilization. In honor of our ancestors, and in defense of our descendants, we thank you for your readiness to mobilize.

After-the-Vote Shabes & Potluck

The upcoming election has everyone holding their breath. The Shabes Committee is hosting an After-the-Vote Shabes for the community after the election on Friday, November 6 at the BWC Building (6 Webster Street in Brookline, MA) from 6:00 - 8:00pm. We will have a brief ritual and a potluck dinner. And we will deal with the results, whatever they are, together.
