ALOHA JULY NEWS & HAPPENINGS

Honoring Our 16 Year Anniversary!

The saying, "It takes a village" was originally an African proverb, the phrase referred to the idea that it takes the interaction and care of many to provide for a child's growth. The phrase has since been often recited in American culture to mean “it takes teamwork.”

Now, how does this relate to Aloha? I often look at our organization as a child, birthed out of necessity with an abundance of kind-hearted souls who chose to take the leap of faith and join the "Aloha Team" on an incredible journey. This month marks our 16th year serving the community. This includes hundreds of locations, over 250 volunteers and well over 40,000 people served (Age 7 - 100+) and 13 GA counties and several states).

From phone calls, emails, program planning and implementation, administration, marketing, fundraising, training, development, well, it takes a village to say the least. Not just any villagers though, it takes hopeful, kind, creative, generous, giving, talented and often fearless adventurers to be part of our unique organization. For each and everyone of you, I am eternally grateful. To trust in a vision that has, and continues, to morph to meet the ever-changing needs of families and individuals faced with the myriad of aging challenges, often means long hours and fearless dedication. Especially since our village is about the interaction and care of the aging vs a child, which comes with the understanding we will endure the loss of many we serve.

Why do it then? Well I have no doubt if you asked those who are and have been "Aloha Team Villagers", they would agree with me that the true treasure lies in the countless amazing moments we share together - be it days filled with laughter, weeks of heartfelt connections or years of nurturing spirits. It's a beautiful reminder that we are all part of something bigger, and each shared smile and bond we create is a testament to the positive impact we're making together and that, simply, is reward enough!

A BIG Mahalo to all of you who have supported us on this amazing journey with your time, talent, donations and to those who have cheered us on, no matter the challenge! We couldn't do it without you!!

With Deep Appreciation,

A New Way to Give Back

"Aloha Amazon Wish List"

We are grateful for the unwavering support of our community and would like to share some exciting news regarding our "Amazon Wish List." Recently, a professional organization inquired about this resource as a means to further assist us, and we are eager to share this information with all of you. The "Amazon Wish List" serves as a transparent tool that outlines the specific supplies we require to enhance our diverse programs, allowing community members to see the extensive efforts involved in our mission. We encourage you to explore the Wish List and to share it with your friends, as well as any organizations or groups you are part of, to foster broader engagement. You can click on one of the green links above or scan the QRCode below.

We are thrilled to report that within just a week of sharing the link with the professional organization, we received our first game donation, which has proven to be a hit among both participants and volunteers alike! This game will also be utilized in our "Staying Sharp" program, further demonstrating the positive impact of community contributions. We invite you to continue your support and engagement, as your involvement plays a crucial role in empowering older adults and caregivers through Aloha to Aging.

VOLUNTEEER TESTIMONIAL

Linda VandenBergh

It’s never too late to try something new. That’s what motivated me to take the advice of a friend and sign up for an orientation day with Aloha to Aging. After just one day I was hooked! I looked around the room of participants at Aloha Day Club and I felt warmth, caring and joy. But the surprise event that told me I was where I was meant to be happened a few weeks after I started volunteering. I discovered, quite by accident, that I shared a unique past with one of the participants. As young women, we both had chosen to join the same Missionary Order of Sisters located just north of Chicago. Mickey was 5 years older than me and was from Gary, Indiana. I grew up in Appleton, Wisconsin. I remember her well and looked up to her and her classmates.. Eventually both of us left the Convent. Mickey returned to Gary until the time came for her to move into her sister’s home in Marietta. I married, had two children, and lived in various places before landing in Marietta in 2012. And yet, here we are, all these years later enjoying time together each week at Aloha Day Club!
