"The first part of the exhibit is a series of illustrations for my upcoming novel, rendered in graphite. These works, along with a full-color book cover, help me present the imaginative quality of this futuristic story.
In the second part, I use colored pencils to create photo realistic renditions of my subjects; the works are intended to stand with paintings despite their unique medium."
In 1955 the library built a second addition; a children’s room in memory of volunteer Grace Simmons whose estate financed the build. Librarians Meredith Hutchins and Alma Hallenborg used this opportunity to implement a new plan for shelving the children’s books—face out and arranged by subjects such as dog, fairytale, history, etc. This new method of shelving allowed children to browse books according to their interests or the illustrations on the cover as opposed to by the very narrow spines visible when the books are shelved normally. This new method of shelving has stayed in place to this day with one or two modifications for the growing collection of children’s books.
The mural shown in the picture above was done by famed Maine artist Francis Hamabe.
