Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is an important criteria of product safety and quality. Every electrical device has to fulfill EMC requirements by law. It is mandatory in the product certification process. The equipment under test (EUT) can have anomalies caused by external impacts (RF or electrical disturbances in close proximity to the EUT), internal impacts (emissions from components) or human interaction (i.e. electrostatic discharge) and must be tested to avoid potential failures.
This tutorial covers a general discussion on the need for EMC testing with some advantages of pre compliance testing followed by a discussion on antenna requirements for EMC testing, chamber requirements for EMC testing and an example of a system level test that is needed for final qualification.

EMC Testing Fundamentals and Pre-Compliance
Presenter: Dr. Vignesh Rajamani
Rohde & Schwarz USA, Inc and Past President of the IEEE EMC Society
| |
|
During product certification, the best way to avoid detecting EMC problems far too late is to include EMC in early design reviews, actively search for interference-causing emissions on the PCB or component level during EMI debugging, followed by precompliance testing on the assembled product. A test setup and test procedures that provide cut-down versions of full compliance tests are the best way to obtain valid and reliable test results that correlate to the measurements from a certified test laboratory. This talk will cover types of standard EMC tests and a discussion about what is required for pre-compliance testing.

RF Antennas for EMC Testing
Presenter: Dr. Jaleel Akhtar, Professor
Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur
| |
|
RF antennas are inherently required for EMC testing of electrical and electronic devices. However, the antennas for EMC testing of devices, including measurement of radiated emission as well as for testing compliance of radiated susceptibility, should conform to some specific requirements in accordance with the particular IEC and CISPR standards. This talk will provide a general overview of RF antennas required for EMC testing of various types of electrical and electronic devices including medical devices. The basic antenna testing procedures relevant for EMC applications, and special antenna requirements for RF emission and RF immunity applications will be explained. Finally, some case studies related to the specific antenna requirements for EMC testing in compliance with CISPR 11, CISPR 32, IEC 60601-1-2 and IEC 61000-4-3 standards will be described.

Chambers and Enclosures for EMC Testing
Presenter: Mr. Garth D’Abreu
Director of Automotive Solutions, ETS-Lindgren USA
| |
|
EMC testing has been underway across different industries for several decades. There have been several developments in instrumentation and test methods, with the most significant of these in the instrumentation. This presentation will highlight some of the different chamber, enclosure and test cell types that are in common use, the fundamental differences in their operation, and discuss their advantages, and shortcomings. Attendees will learn about the optimal test chamber environment for a given application.

EMC Air Worthiness of Navy Aircraft –
A System Level EMC Test
Presenter: Mr. John LaSalle
Technical Fellow, Northrop Grumman and President of the IEEE EMC Society
| |
|
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), airworthy means the aircraft conforms to its type design and is in a condition for safe operation. The military definition is similar. EMC Air Worthiness of Navy Aircraft involves different levels of risk mitigation. To address airworthiness, the electromagnetic interference (EMI) performance of the aircraft-installed equipment must be assessed, as well as aircraft electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and the environment in which it operates. This presentation addresses why EMI and EMC are critical to air worthiness. It will also address the steps necessary to provide validation that the aircraft is air worthy, and safe to fly. The overall theme of the presentation is about educating the audience about system level EMC using air worthiness of a military aircraft as an example.
