9 Healthy Habits to Keep Cold & Flu at Bay
Article from Metagenics

Simple, Healthy Habits You Can Start Today

It’s still that time of year: cold weather, cozy nights, hot cocoa…and the dreaded seasonal plague. Okay, maybe it’s not the plague, but it can sure feel like it.

Cold and flu can strike at any time, but they’re particularly common during this time of year; and because they’re highly contagious, they can spread like wildfire. Whether it’s the stuffy-nose-sore-throat common cold or the fever-ridden influenza, you can hopefully avoid sickness by practicing the following good habits.

  1. Wash hands OFTEN! It’s a no-brainer; if you want to keep germs away, keep them off your hands. That includes washing before and after meals, after coughing or sneezing, after being outside for a while, and especially after traveling via public transit. If you don’t have access to soap and water, opt for an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that kills infectious germs. Whatever you do, keep the face touching and eye rubbing to a minimum.
  2. Check your stress levels. Too much stress, especially for prolonged periods of time, can significantly lower your immune system—leaving you more susceptible to all kinds of illnesses. To help kick stress to the curb, find activities that help you relax and practice them often, like yoga, meditation, watching a favorite movie, listening to music, or going for a run. It’s impossible to overestimate the importance of me time!
  3. Eat a rainbow diet. Fresh, colorful fruits and veggies are packed with essential nutrients that support your immune system, not to mention the overall wellbeing of your body. Also, make sure you limit your alcohol intake. (Sorry, but it’s for your own good!)

Humacel: The Best Defense Against Viruses
Humacel is a product we have recommended for viral infections and immune protection for years.

The compounds in Humacel inhibit viral attachment to target host cells by blocking the glycoproteins (the “sticky” binding sites) on virus surfaces. The entire process of attachment to a host cell is halted, thereby arresting viral replication. This process also sends a signal to the immune system alerting it of the invader. This kicks the immune system into action against the virus that has been laid vulnerable by this coating.

The compounds in Humacel have been extensively studied and have proven to be effective in the inhibition of numerous viruses, including; coxsackie A9, influenza A, influenza B, herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2, HIV type 1 and 2, cytomegalovirus, Ebstein Barr virus, vaccinia virus, SARS, H5N1, H1N1, hepatitis C and others. ( 1,   2 )

One study found fulvic acids capable of rendering vaccinia virus, HIV and SARS virus non-infectious and demonstrated fulvic acid’s ability to inactivate genetically diverse strains of influenza, including H5N1 ( 3 ).

Medical studies show that difficult respiratory illnesses common in children are readily resolved with Humacel dietary supplementation. With results like these, Humacel would be a worthy addition to a dietary regime during flu season.

A Natural Approach to
Stopping Colds and Flu.
Article from Biotics Research

High doses of key nutrients, such as vitamin C, have been shown to be beneficial for both prevention of colds and flu as well as reducing the duration of colds and flu.

A study investigating vitamin C's anti-viral capabilities found that "vitamin C shows in vivo anti-viral immune responses at the early time of infection, especially against influenza virus, through increased production of IFN-α/β" (Kim et al, 2013). Vitamin C is currently being studied as a possible treatment for coronavirus (Lambert, 2020).

Dr Thomas Levy, a U.S. cardiologist and author of a new book about the uses of vitamin C, has stated that In tests, vitamin C has worked against every virus — if given in sufficient concentration. In addition to boosting the immune system, vitamin C may be beneficial for optimal brain health and metabolic function.
Cold vs. Flu: Signs, Symptoms, & Stages
Article from Metagenics

’Tis the season…for the sniffles. Alongside holiday cheer, cold and flu viruses are all around us. If you do catch one of them, it’s helpful to understand your symptoms and know when you’re most contagious—so you can avoid sharing the bugs with those around you.

Is it just a cold, or is it the flu?
Sometimes it can be hard to tell. While both the common cold and the flu are respiratory illnesses, they are caused by different viruses. 1  But because symptoms are similar, it may take a little detective work to determine which of these is ailing you.

Cold
Approximately one billion Americans catch colds each year. 2  Symptoms show up gradually and often begin with a sore throat that is later accompanied by congestion (stuffy or runny nose), headaches, and general malaise. With rest and TLC, a cold may ease up within a week. 3

Flu
While the same feelings of stuffiness may occur, the flu is characterized by the sudden onset of fever, aches and chills, dry cough, and extreme fatigue. 4  Unlike colds, the flu can give way to secondary bacterial infections, pneumonia, and other risks, 1  so it’s important to take time off and get the rest your body needs to recover. Both children and elderly people are at an increased risk of catching the flu due to lower immunity. 1

Ingredients

  • 1 T coconut oil
  • 1 large yellow onion, chopped
  • 6 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 celery stalks, sliced
  • 1 lb shitake mushrooms
  • 1 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • 12 cups water
  • 4 heads baby bok choy, bottoms chopped off
  • 1/2 head kale, chopped
  • optional: 1 tablespoon freshly grated ginger

Directions

  1. Chop off the bottom of the stem from your mushrooms and discard. Separate stems from tops and slice tops and remaining stem if necessary, into large pieces. You will only discard the very bottom of the stems, not the full stems as they contain many nutritional benefits!
  2. Heat up coconut oil in a large pot over medium heat.
  3. Add onions and sauté for 5 minutes or until translucent.
  4. Add in garlic and cook for 1 more minute.
  5. Add in celery and mushrooms and sautee for about 10 minutes or until mushrooms have wilted.
  6. Add in spices (including ginger, if using) and water and bring to a boil.
  7. Then let simmer, covered for 1 hour or as long as you want (the longer you leave, the better!)
  8. Add bok choy and kale in the last 10 minutes of cooking to wilt.
  9. Serve warm or store for up to 1 week in the refrigerator.
