From the Pastor...

Grace and peace to you, FPC!

Last week in Sunday School for Everyone (our adult Bible study, which meets most Sundays in the Lounge at 11:30-ish am), we read Psalm 8, which praises God for giving human beings “dominion” over God’s creation: “you have put all things under their feet” (verse 6).

We wondered whether the psalm-singer would make that same claim today. Doesn’t it encourage us to run roughshod over the world? Doesn’t it sound a little arrogant?

Too often, people outside and inside the Church have heard it that way, taking it as license to treat the world however they want. But we can also understand “dominion” to mean God calls us to be stewards who creatively care for and responsibly use the earth and all that’s in it, because it all belongs to God.

What we do with our money is a major way we determine how we use the resources entrusted to us. When we spend it to provide what others need to live, or to help further peace and justice, or to glorify God (and those three goals aren’t mutually exclusive), then we’re spending it as good stewards.

As we enter this year’s Stewardship Season, think and pray about what God has specifically put under your feet, and how you might use it to be the steward God calls you to be.

See you on Sunday, and SDG (Solo Deo Gloria)!

NOVEMBER MISSION OF THE MONTH

Our November Mission of the Month is the Springfield School District Turkey Fund. Started 45 years ago by local school administrators, the Turkey Fund began by providing holiday food baskets to about 10 families. Over the years, it has grown to serve more than 100 families in Springfield and Morton. Although best known for its holiday food distribution, the Turkey Fund helps families throughout the year. Assistance includes help with utility bills, food insecurity, and gift cards for everyday necessities. The fund has also expanded its efforts to help families with transportation and meal expenses related to cancer treatment. Each December, volunteers deliver turkeys, bread, and grocery gift cards to local families who could use a little extra help during the holiday season. Please consider contributing to November's Mission of the Month. Your donations will go directly toward helping families in our own community.
