MAYOR'S UPDATE

From the desk of Mayor Rika Levin

With a heavy heart, I offer my deepest condolences on the passing of Northern Wilcher, Town of Ossining Council Member from 2004 – 2021.

Northern made remarkable contributions to our community – which is deeply appreciated by all of us in Ossining and the surrounding areas.

Congratulations to the Ossining’s Elks on their 100th anniversary. Thank you for all that you do for our community.

Last week's Ossining & Briarcliff 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at the waterfront was deeply moving, as always. We shared our stories, prayed together for the well-being of our community, and praised the courage of all those who are no longer with us. As the Chaplain reiterated, bravery comes in many forms, and we hope this day inspires others to serve our country. I thank our own first responders for putting this meaningful event together every year.

On Thursday, September 12th, we hosted a ribbon-cutting event, where we celebrated the installation of our new, inclusive playground equipment in Sparta Park!

This project was made possible by Senator Pete Harckham's commitment to inclusion in our community by securing $100K in CREST funding. Together, our collective efforts to replace the playground at Sparta Park with inclusive and accessible playground equipment are a reality.

Playgrounds like these are not just recreational outlets but also symbols of our commitment to Ossining's quality of life. They provide ample health, fitness, and social interaction opportunities, enhancing our community spirit and well-being. This highly desirable amenity will quickly become a valuable local asset that many Ossining residents can easily access by walking or biking.

National Voter Registration Day is a nonpartisan civic holiday dedicated to celebrating our democracy. Since its kickoff in 2012, the holiday and its team of thousands of partners have worked to get over 5 million Americans registered to vote in time for their next trip to the ballot box.

New York offers online voter registration. You can register by mail to vote in New York by printing a voter registration form, filling it out, and mailing it to your local election office. You can also register to vote in person if you prefer.

Constitution Day, September 17, 2024 is observed each year on September 17 to commemorate the signing of the Constitution on September 17, 1787, and “recognize all who, by coming of age or by naturalization, have become citizens.

The Village of Ossining Water Department will start our semiannual hydrant-flushing program on Monday morning, September 23rd, 2024. Flushing of hydrants will be performed between 2:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. in order to minimize disruptions to our residents.

The entire hydrant-flushing program will take approximately five weeks to complete. As the flushing of hydrants takes place closer to your home, you may notice some discoloration in your water first thing in the morning. Do not be alarmed. Just run your water for a short period of time, and it should clear up. If the discoloration persists, please notify the Water Department at 941-6111.

Good news! The Ossining Recreation and Parks Department will plant 28 trees in Sparta Park, Vets Park, Arthur Jones, and Dale Ave this fall.

Funding for these trees is made by NYPA in support of our environmental stewardship commitments to protect biodiversity and reduce carbon emissions with an incentive that they match our order with another tree of the same size and species. This year, NYPA offers an extra incentive for trees planted in Disadvantaged Communities. For every tree intended to be planted in a Disadvantaged Community, NYPA will match our order with two trees of the same size and species!

Trees provide numerous benefits – they clean the air, mitigate stormwater flooding, reduce building energy needs, and provide food and shelter for wildlife. NYPA’s Tree Power program helps communities realize these benefits and supports them in reaching sustainability and decarbonization goals. The extra incentivization for planting in Disadvantaged Communities will help the Village of Ossining increase tree equity across the state and ensure that the benefits of trees are felt by all New Yorkers.

This week marks the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Month, which goes from September 15th through October 15th. During this time, there will be various celebrations to honor the heritage and contributions made by members of the Hispanic community throughout Westchester County and New York State.

The Hispanic Advisory Board, under the leadership of Westchester County Executive George Latimer, is asking the community to participate in an assessment survey for the Hispanic community of Westchester County.

The comprehensive survey targeting the Latino community is being conducted in collaboration with Pace University and marks the first needs assessment of its kind in over two decades. The survey aims to gather insights and data from the Latino community within Westchester County, addressing various aspects such as education, healthcare, employment, housing, and social services. The last assessment, which was conducted more than 20 years ago, highlighted the necessity for updated information to better understand and address the evolving needs and challenges faced by the Latino population.
