Dear Members,
A Member's driver reached out to PBA asking for our assistance on helping them get more information on how they can get their CDL medical certification renewed, due to them being on dialysis.
The driver advised that they haven't driven since July and they have until next July to get their medical certification renewed. They really miss driving and the fun people, but it'll take a waiver or kidney transplant for that to happen.
PBA reached out to FMCSA to try to find an answer and the below is their reply:
“The Congress sets those standards based on need and safety to the public. Their advisors and committee members receive years of medical studies data and expert opinions before they mandate a regulation to be written. I truly understand the gentleman’s desire to work as a motor coach driver; however the safety risks incurred by his medical condition and need for daily or weekly dialysis specifically prohibit him from operating a commercial motor vehicle (especially with 50 plus passengers). I am certain the medical community had plenty to say regarding the numerous risks for Congress to specifically prohibit individuals with this medical need. Our job is merely to enforce.”
After advising the driver of FMCSA's response, he asked for PBA's assistance on helping them find an O+ kidney donor.
If you can be of help, or know someone that would be interested, please let us know.
