CANTICLE FOR GEORGIA
by the Youth of St. Greg's
O give thanks to our God who is good:
whose love endures forever.
The Sun and Moon and Milky Way:
give to our God your thanks and praise.
Sunrise and sunset, night and day:
give to our God your thanks and praise.
Ol' Appalachia, rivers and waterfalls, forests and fields, islands and marsh:
give to our God your thanks and praise.
You pines and oaks, palms and cypress, echinacea and goldenrod, Spanish moss:
give to our God your thanks and praise.
Crawfish, alligators, salamanders, frogs, river otters, catfish, shrimp, sea turtles:
give to our God your thanks and praise.
Deer, squirrels, snakes, cicadas, vultures, cardinals:
give to our God your thanks and praise.
You Georgians of all genders, races, origins, and beliefs from the Peach State, the Land of Waffle House:
give to our God your thanks and praise.
All you saints and martyrs of the South(east):
give to our God your thanks and praise!
Adapted from the Benedicite Aotearoa in A New Zealand Prayer Book by St Greg's Youth Sunday School on Creation Care Sunday, during our lesson asking What is Creation?
We began from the vantage of Voyager 1's image of the "Pale Blue Dot" and our common origin as "star stuff." As Ron Balthazor reminded us in his sermon, we are dust, water, and the breath of the Holy Spirit, and in this way all of creation is our kin. We reexamined the creation stories in Genesis through this lens and asked what it means for God's call to us to "till it and keep it." (Genesis 2:15, NRSVUE)
We heard from Māori voices, the Indigenous Polynesian people of Aotearoa (New Zealand), about kaitiakitanga, their holistic cultural principle of guardianship and protection for the land and its resources. One speaker in a video pointed out that the first step is simply noticing the creation around us: paying reverent attention to the features of the land and the cycles and relationships of life, which teaches us how to tend it.
And so we studied the Benedicite Aotearoa in A New Zealand Prayer Book, then adapted it to our landscape. What do we notice and love in the creation around us? How does seeing the landscape, plants, and animals as kin change the way we relate to them? This Canticle was the result - and we hope you denizens of the Land of Waffle House can join us in rejoicing in the splendor of Creation!
Peace,
Jeff Ballance 💟

Looking for new Parish Life and Ceilidh leadership
Dear fellow Gregorians,
Since Jeff took on the role of Youth Minister this summer, our family's calendar has been lovingly filled through year's end and beyond with Youth Sunday School, EYC, Confirmation, and Blindspot activities, on top of both of our demanding full-time jobs. With that in mind, I am stepping down from my roles as head of the Parish Life Committee and facilitator of the Ceilidh service so that our family can find a sustainable rhythm with our full presence for the community and each other.
It's been a joy to serve our community in these roles, and we are so thankful for these two ministries and the people that support them. We're now looking for someone to take on each of these roles:
• Head of the Parish Life Committee (perhaps 2 co-chairs)
• Leader of Ceilidh Service
Please note that the Ceilidh service will be on hiatus until a new facilitator is found and will not happen in October.
If you're interested in either role, or just want to learn more about what they involve, please reach out to me at lillianbh@gmail.com.
With love and gratitude,
Lillian Ballance ☮️
