Mental Health and Climate Change Campaigns
SI COAD is launching two new public awareness campaigns to build awareness and provide information and resources surrounding mental health and the symptoms of climate change and weather related disasters. These campaigns will each live on nonprofitstatenisland.org on their own respective webpages and will include email blasts/social media posts with resources, trainings, and information sharing. All SI COAD coalition partners and Nonprofit Staten Island members are encouraged to share resources as we aggregate and organize for Staten Island.

Respiratory Hygiene During the Holidays
Please be reminded that we are currently experiencing an uptick in COVID-19 cases, and that there is a new dominant variant in our region (XBB.1.5), which is a subvariant of Omicron. This new dominant variant has been dubbed by the World Health Organization as the "most transmissible" detected yet, but has yet to be identified as more or less severe in comparison to other variants. Continued mask wearing, social distancing, hand washing, frequent testing, and of course staying up to date with vaccinations - especially the bivalent booster - is all advised to ensure the best possible protection.
As a reminder, SI COAD provides PPE and test kits to all who are interested. We offer KN95, N95, rapid test kits, hand sanitizer, and disinfectant wipes. Please email frank@sinfpa.org directly with inquiries. We can provide large and small allotments.

Report at Home Covid Testing
COVID-19 testing remains an essential tool as the United States heads into the holiday season and people navigate respiratory viruses. While taking a rapid COVID-19 test has become commonplace, test results are not often reported. COVID-19 test results provide valuable data that public health departments can use to assess the needs and modify the responses in the local community, the state or the nation.
Please circulate and utilize an important resource established by the National Institute of Health to help track COVID-19 cases HERE.

City Council Testimony Opportunity: Nonprofit Contracting and the Joint Task Force to Get Nonprofits Paid on Time
Jan. 30, 2023
1 PM
Location:
Council Chambers - City Hall
The hearing will focus on:
-
Int 0510-2022: A Local Law to amend the administrative code of the city of New York, in relation to establishing prevailing wage requirements for city-contracted human service workers.
-
Int 0511-2022: A Local Law to amend the administrative code of the city of New York, in relation to setting time limits for the procurement process, reporting on agency compliance and developing an online platform for managing procurement.
-
Int 0514-2022: A Local Law to amend the administrative code of the city of New York, in relation to a public procurement database.
This will be an important hearing as HSC is in support of these bills and the #JustPay campaign seeks to implement changes around inequitable pay among human services workers. We understand that the prevailing wage legislation is complicated, and will testify about the need for critical changes to be made so that we can stay in support of the bill. Ensuring that this is a mandate on government, to pay a prevailing wage on contracts, and that wages are set based on comparable salaries in government and the private sector, are paramount to the success of this legislation.
If you would like to testify at the hearing via Zoom or in-person, register here. If you cannot testify in-person or via Zoom, written testimony may be submitted at this link up to 72 hours after the hearing has been adjourned. You can also watch the hearing live here.

Demographics via Candid: Join the Movement
February 14, 2023
2 PM - 3 PM
Comprehensive and public data on demographics is foundational to our sector’s work on racial equity. But the need for it results in many requests for this information, in different ways, from various funders. The result is a huge burden on nonprofits to collect and provide this data, taking valuable time away from their crucial mission-driven work.
Demographics via Candid empowers nonprofits to share vital information about their work one time (Data1x) on their Candid profile where it can be deployed as needed to funders, philanthropy-serving organizations, researchers, and other stakeholders across the field. Join to:
- Find out what data is available and the questions we can (and can’t) answer with this data.
- Hear how leaders in the field are using demographic data and the challenges we face to make sense of it all without a standardized format.
- Learn how you can join the movement and get a baseline report on your grantees’ and members’ demographic data.

Center for an Urban Future report
Strengthening NYC’s Nonprofits by Reducing Administrative Burdens report finds that nonprofits contracting with city agencies to deliver social services are routinely forced to divert precious resources and countless hours of staff time to filling out paperwork because of requirements in the contract registration and reporting process that are redundant, unnecessarily complicated, and maddeningly inconsistent. Some of the administrative inefficiencies broach the absurd: uploading th.e same document to the same system 30 times—and then having to send it via email anyway; hiring full-time staff to enter data into duplicative systems, instead of sorely needed case managers and paralegals; scrambling to collect documents for dozens of audits in the same fiscal year only to be slapped with critical findings for purchases as minor as $11; and compiling 37 different documents to secure a $5,000 discretionary grant from a City Council member.
