RAM Prices Surge Due To AI Demand

In late 2025, the global technology sector was rocked by an unprecedented surge in RAM prices and a severe shortage of supply. The primary driver behind this crisis is the explosive growth of artificial intelligence (AI) and the massive buildout of data centers worldwide. Due to a massive increase in people using AI for more and more tasks and the general increase in “recreational” uses of these products, companies hosting AI solutions need a lot more memory in order to continue to keep up with the demand requests.

Several major memory manufacturers have shifted their production focus toward high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and server-grade DDR5 modules, which are essential for AI workloads. In laymen’s terms, that means that the RAM being produced for standard computers and other general-use items has dropped off in favor of these companies making their money by producing and selling a lot more specialized products to just a handful of large companies (OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, etc.) directly.

What Does This Mean For Me?

Unfortunately, the result is that consumer-grade RAM has become scarce and dramatically more expensive. Some RAM has already quadrupled in pricing over just the last three months. This increase has also taken place on older forms of RAM that many thought would be discontinued, but have become a necessary product to use for people who can’t get their hands on the newer model types. It has also given rise to far more units that are coming with 4GB or 8GB RAM to start after nearly two years of the industry pushing for a 16GB minimum in business/organizational settings.

Unfortunately, industry experts and memory manufacturers agree that this crisis is not a short-term phenomenon. Micron, one of the world’s largest memory producers, has warned that the imbalance between supply and demand is likely to persist well beyond 2026, with some forecasts extending the shortage into 2028 or later. The long timelines required to bring new manufacturing facilities online, coupled with manufacturers’ strategic focus on high-margin AI memory, mean that consumers and businesses should expect elevated prices and limited availability for the foreseeable future.
