The Stigma of Autism: The Dangers of Equating Neuro-Differences With Disability
10:30 AM - 11:30 AM
Dr. Christopher Manente
Recent research has demonstrated that individuals with autism have far less favorable outcomes in terms of quality of life throughout adulthood as compared to individuals across other disability categories. Specifically, people with autism are often relegated to long adult lives characterized by social isolation, unemployment, untreated psychological and physical health conditions, and near complete reliance on parents, family and other caregivers to meet their basic needs. This situation represents a crisis for many adults with autism and their families. There are many factors that contribute to the lack of availability of high-quality programs and services for adults with ASD. Some of these factors include a lack of funding, transportation, opportunities for community-based employment & recreation, established training models, research related to effective practices, provider agencies, and highly qualified staff. This presentation will explore the various barriers to successful outcomes for adults with ASD and examine the model provided by the Rutgers Center for Adult Autism Services in addressing these barriers for adults on the spectrum with a diverse range of support needs and the potential that the RCAAS model has for replication on a global scale.

Depression Vs. Normal Grief: Understanding Two Painful States of Mind & Their Implications
1:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Dr. Nancy McWilliams
The COVID pandemic has caused significant suffering to many of us. How can we understand when this suffering is a normal grief reaction and when it is a psychological disorder? For many reasons, we tend to be confused these days about the difference between normal sadness (grief, mourning) and clinical depression. Both states involve a sad mood, a slowed-down pace, feelings of hopelessness, and problems with sleeping, eating, and energy for daily activities. But there are critical differences, and important ramifications of those differences, that this hour-long presentation will explore. There will be time for questions and comments from the audience.
