Edit Smarter logo with Larry

February 17, 2025

I had an amazing vacation - visiting Thailand, Cambodia, Viet Nam and China. I took over 1,300 stills and dozens of videos. (Smile... no, I don't plan to show them all to you!) But I have some lovely replacement video for my New Zealand footage. Elephants, monkeys, tigers, pandas and lots of temples - both ruined and active.

I bought an iPhone 16 Pro for this trip, specifically for its camera and, while I haven't put it to a complete test, I'm impressed with what it can do. The three different focal length lenses are lovely and the zoom controls are fast and smooth.

Like many of you, I've been deeply troubled by the amount of change in our industry. LA and NYC are both in a world of hurt. However, our industry is far bigger than those two cities. To that end, my lead story is an excerpt of a commentary from a newsletter published by Andy Marken, an industry veteran and marcom executive. I found his thoughts both reassuring and challenging.

One of the frequent requests from my social media team are for vertical videos for social media. The problem is that almost all the videos I shoot are horizontal. Final Cut has a very clever feature called "Smart Conform" that converts horizontal video into vertical. Here's a tutorial that explains how this works.

Sally is returning to editing in Premiere after working elsewhere for a few years. She asked me to explain how titles work. So, I created the following tutorial.

Another request from Sally was to explain how and why we use buses in audio mixing. Buses are very powerful tools which exist in Premiere and Audition; as well as ProTools and Fairlight. FCP's Roles attempt to emulate buses, but not very well. I wrote this tutorial nine years ago. It is still accurate and worth reading.

While I was on vacation, I made a point not to read the news, mostly to get away from work, reduce my stress, and take break from our industry upheaval. Politically, socially and economically these are very challenging times. It often feels like we are buffeted by forces out of our control - which in one sense is true.

But, in another sense, we have more control than most. We can communicate - powerfully - with people all over the world. We are our own gatekeeper. At a time where deep fakes and misinformation seem to rule, we have the ability to shine our truth for others to see. We are not powerless, nor need we be silent. We can cower in a corner hoping no one notices us, or we can use our media skills to help the people that need to be heard.

Staying silent is easy - but helps no one. Not even ourselves. Find a cause you care about and support it. Others dream of the power we already hold.

Until next Monday, stay healthy, stay hopeful and edit well.
