Message From The President:
Hudson Catholic
The first Lasallian school to ‘Re-affiliate’
with The Brothers of the Christian Schools
| | |
The Road to Reaffiliation.
One of the things that was important to me when I assumed the role of President-Principal was trying to reunite Hudson Catholic with the De La Salle Christian Brothers who had left Hudson Catholic in 2012. I believe that every Catholic high school should have a charism, and Hudson Catholic had become a diocesan school without one. More important, our identity had always been linked to the Christian Brothers and I believed it was important to reclaim that identity, if possible. In 2020, I initiated talks with the District of Eastern North America to become a Lasallian institution once again. I think it is important to note that there has never been a reaffiliation of a former Lasallian school. Never.
Since the Brothers departed, there were a number of alumni who had continued a strong relationship with the Brothers, particularly Tom Bender and Larry Basinski, and they would prove to be a wonderful resource leveraging those relationships as we began to navigate the process.
In 2021, my first request was flatly denied. In 2022, it was denied again, but with the caveat that the timing wasn’t right. 2023 brought the same response, but also some restructuring at DENA. In 2024, I was invited to bring myself and some staff members to a Lasallian symposium on urban education in Philadelphia. We presented on many of the innovative programs offered at Hudson Catholic, particularly our college programs. Last June, I was asked to drive to Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft, NJ, and present our case for reaffiliation to the District leadership. I made our case, highlighting all the positives – financial stability, increased enrollment, innovative programs, diversity, Ivy League acceptances, and the like – but I think the best point I made was looking out the window at the beautiful CBA campus, with its multiple buildings and acres of sports fields, and turning to my audience and stating, “While this place is magnificent, I’m pretty sure that St. John Baptist De la Salle would have chosen to work at Hudson Catholic. Hudson Catholic IS the Lasallian mission.”
Later that day, I received an email and a phone call that we had been approved for reaffiliation at the end of this year. The first reaffiliation ever.
The future is certainly bright as Hudson Catholic Regional High School continues to move forward, only now as a Lasallian high school…once again.
Ed. note: More information to come as we move closer to the end of the school year.

5th Annual Day of Giving April 7th
Honor the Memory of The Man From La Salle,
St. John Baptist,
And what he gave to all of us
| | |
On the Feast Day of 'our founder and patron saint', April 7th, we choose to honor St. John Baptist de La Salle, the patron saint of teachers and the founder of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, by conducting our annual Hudson Catholic Day of Giving because it brings to mind and stresses the importance of the Lasallian Mission and what it means to educate the children of poor and working class families, And we are them.

Our Goal This Year is $33,333
Knock Our Socks Off!
And We'll Send You a Pair
| | In past years, we've succeeded in motivating giving with matching gifts. And it has worked well. Apart from matching gifts of $15,000 to $25,000 offered since Year Two, we've managed to raise Hudson Catholic Day of Giving gift totals among alumni and friends from $13,632 to $30,095 over the past four years. By now, what we are trying to achieve is familiar to you. We have established and made a tradition of our own Day of Giving that sets our school apart from December's Giving Tuesday, when every non-profit competes with all others for charitable gifts. | | |
So, this year, without a matching gift, we are asking our Hawks -- MORE HAWKS -- to reach into their hearts and wallets to raise our record giving for the day to $33,333. Naturally, the money we raise in this campaign becomes available to provide tuition assistance to students in need, supports our top-notch academic programs, and furnishes uniforms, equipment and transport for our highly competitive athletic teams.
As a token of our appreciation this year, if you can knock our socks off with a gift of $333 or higher, we'll send them to you! That is, we'll send you a fresh pair of our Hawk Socks (pictured). They are not for sale through any source; they can only be earned through your support of The Home of The Hawks!
Hawk Pride!
Please make your gift on or before April 7th
Go Hawks!

Come out to help honor
Wall of Honor Inductees on April 24th
| | Along with the 1976 State Basketball Championship Team, led by All-State and All-Time School Leading Scorer and Rebounder, Michael 'O'Koren '76, and that team's Coach, the late Joseph 'Rocky' Pope, both featured in the last issue of Building The Legacy, four Hawk athletes from varying eras will be suitably honored by having their banners raised on to the Courtyard Wall of the 'Rocky Pope Gym' on the night of April 24th. Plan to join us and celebrate. Details below in the Events section. | | |
Jillian Ward '18 (Softball) was a two-time All County Softball Shortstop who led the Hawks to their first County Championship and State Playoffs.
She was Hudson Catholic’s first female athlete to receive a D1 athletic scholarship for Softball, and played four years at Fairleigh Dickinson. She is currently our Head Softball Coach and holds the distinction as the youngest Varsity Softball Head Coach in the state of New Jersey.
| | |
Thomas Bender '04 (Football-Basketball-Baseball-Track) was a four-sport star, earning 9 varsity letters for excelling in football, basketball, baseball, and track. He led or contributed to his teams qualifying for the Football Parochial 'A' State Playoffs in 2003, and winning the County Baseball Championship in 2004 to avenge a loss in the title game a year earlier. Tom earned three All County honors in two sports -- in Football at two positions -- Quarterback and Punter -- and in Baseball, rotating between the Outfield and Catching He was selected to the NY/NJ Governor's Bowl Football All Star Game, was named Hudson Catholic Athlete of the Year for the 2003-04 school year, and was inducted to the Hudson Catholic Football Wall of Fame in 2012.
| | |
Dennis Cronin '81 was a prolific four-year middle distance runner whose selection signifies his athletic excellence and many accomplishments attendant in his running Cross Country, Indoor Track, and Outdoor Track, earning All County honors in all three seasons. He made multiple Penn Relay appearances and held several school records upon graduation and for some time thereafter. Wall of Honor member Coach Paul Lenczuk, during his 2022 installation, remarked about a handful of athletes during his 40-year tenure deserving of this honor, and Dennis Cronin was among those he endorsed. That spoke volumes in relation to the the many great performers on Lenczuk's track teams over the years.
| | |
Paul Santasieri '74 was a four-year letter winner in cross country and track. As a junior, Paul contributed to the Hawks’ first Cross Country City Championship in 1972, then as a senior, went undefeated and set records at three courses, including Lincoln Park, earning All County honors. On the Indoor track, he won the City and County 2 Mile event and set new school records in the One Mile and Two Mile runs, also earning All City and All County honors. Outdoors, he went undefeated in all dual meets and captured the County Championship title in the Two Mile event. Paul received a full scholarship to run at Fairleigh Dickinson University, where his four-year career culminated in many additional personal achievements, including Co-Captaining the Knights’ nationally-ranked Cross Country team, and his election to the FDU Hall of Fame in 2019.
| | Hooray to our Hawk Helpers! | | We could't do this digital magazine in the manner that we do, nor could we share information as widely on social media or by email, or stay connected to as many Hawks as we do, without help from a good number of loyal Hawks who are happy to join in the fun with finding, communicating with, and sharing information about, their brother and sister Hawks. And so, for no particular reason or timing, and at great risk of (and with apologies for) omitting someone equally deserving of mention, we'd like to extend our profuse thanks for, and encouragement to continue all such efforts put forth that helps us to 'STAY CONNECTED', to: Bob Stroebel '69, George Gilcher '68, Ken Such '80, Peter Morales '74, Vic Pianese '75, Casey Zachowski '73, Rich Buchicchio '83, Larry Basinski '70, and Eduardo Pena '90. And very special thanks for the year-long support from Jill Cypher and Jenine D'Addetta in the Office of Advancmeent. | | |

That is how Mr. Jabir Brinkley, Hudson Catholic's Lead College Counselor described his fourth College Fair since stepping on campus in 2024. Gazzale, and Our Hawks Strike Again!
Hawks To Attend Space Camp and the
Poconos Environmental Education Camp
| | Hall of Fame Faculty Mr. Phil Gazzale has been coordinating our Advanced Space Camp and PEEC scholarship applications for many years, and this year, without exception, he and our Hawks came through with flying colors. The Scholarship Fund for Inner City Children recently informed us that Sophomore Adienne Palanca and Junior Julien Siek will be experiencing Space Camp in July, with all fees ($2,000 per student) and plane fare to Huntsville, Alabama covered. The SFIC will also cover costs for two of our freshmen, Isabella Castro and Dwight Escarez, to attend PEEC for one week this summer. Phil says: "All four of these students are excellent Hudson Catholic Hawks." | | |
Our Hawk basketball teams closed out winning seasons after bowing out of the State Playoffs. The Boys finished at 16 -10 with a 49-38 home loss to Don Bosco Prep in the quarterfinals. The Girls finished 17-10 and claimed a victory in their State Playoff opener, 70-17 over Mount St. Dominic, but suffered a heartbreaker in their semi-final game against Saddle River Day, 39-38, with two game-winning shots in the final 12 seconds failing to fall. Thousand-point scorer Kharington Schwindt will graduate, but Legacy Hawk Susan Gentile, who had 21 points in the season finale, will return next season.
Both teams came up short in their County Championship games, in stiff challenges -- the Boys to 3-time defending champion St. Peter's and the Girls to 5-time defending champion, Bayonne.
The Girls program continues to demonstrate excellence in performance. Since our last County Championship in 2019, the team has advanced to the County title game in 2020, 2025, and 2026.
The Boys team will graduate Elijah Williams, AJ Williams, and Jaden Mason, but look forward to the return of Ashton Graves, and Shelton Gibbs.
| | |
All County Tradition Continues
with Schwindt, Gentile, Graves
Hudson Catholic maintains a long tradition of athletic excellence across all sports, which culminates in individual seasonal honors that allow for bragging rights in our local neighborhoods and wards. This year is no exception. Earning First Team Girls Basketball honors were senior Kharington Schwindt and junior Susan Gentile; their teammate Lia Barker received Honorable Mention. On the Boys side, Ashton Graves was named to First Team honors, with Noreaga James and Elijah Williams receiving Honorable Mention.

Hold Career Fair for Hawks
| | |
Our outstanding benefactor, the Student/Partner Alliance, not only provides generous tuition assistance annually to over 30 Hawks, they back that support up with mentoring support and various events, including a recent Career Fair. Students and mentors engaged in thoughtful discussions about various careers in financial investing, aided by volunteers from Lord Abbett, the independent, privately held investment company headquartered in Jersey City. Our visiting professionals shared their personal journeys and insights, and the S/PA mentors added to the experience by making the conversations so meaningful to our students.

On deck. Remembering the late Joe Trombetta '69. Joe had a story to tell. Or a few. As a student at Hudson Catholic, Joe had a part-time job. During the baseball season. His job description read: Bat Boy, New York Yankees. He would leave right from school to head to the games at Yankee Stadium and must have been the envy of his classmates, to be able to wear the Yankee pinstripes and be in the home team dugout with all the Yankee heroes, including the great Mickey Mantle in the early part of the 1969 season (and seasons before that) before The Mick retired in mid-season.
| | Alumni Roundup on the College Basketball Hardwood. We had two former Hawks' teams Dancin' in March Madness. UPenn (Alex Massung '24) won the Ivy League Title but bowed to Illinois. Virginia (Elijah Gertrude '23) was also selected into the field following their loss to Duke in the ACC Title Game, topping Wright State, before coming up short versus Tennessee. Auburn (Tahaad Pettiford '24), after two wins, was in the NIT semi-finals at this writing, while Quinnipiac (Keith McKnight '25) and Manhattan (Omari Moore '25 and Asst Coach JR Lynch '13) ended their seasons in the MAAC league tournament. | | |
Tell Us
Just one of many things that unites us as Hawks is that Hudson Catholic alumni spread around the nation and the world are making incredible contributions to their communities, professions, and to Hudson Catholic.
If you know of an exceptional Hawk deserving recognition, we invite you to share why, by writing to advancement@hudsoncatholic.org with examples of Hawk alumni and alumnae leadership, service, and achievement...........and occasional whimsy.
| | It's all buried in the Jersey Journal archives, but it's there! The 1972 Jersey City Track Championship Meet at Lincoln Park delivered some notable performances, and one unusual result. Hall of Fame senior Bill Cullen highlighted the Hawks' day with a dominant first place finish in 157.3 in the 880 Yard Run (yes, Yards back in the day!). In the One Mile Run, Wall of Honor member junior Al Long ran second in 4:38.3, with classmate Don Hanbury finishing fourth, just four seconds behind Long. And Wall of Honor electee freshman Paul Santasieri, in a glimpse of what was to come, finished 3rd in the Two Mile Run at 11:05.0. Digging deeper into the results, there it is -- the Pole Vault event, where we find the prolific middle distance runner, Al Long, sitting in 4th place! To which Bill Cullen says: "It proves Al had team spirit. It was all about the points." We caught up to Al, whose only recollection of the Pole Vault was that "fortunately, it was my last appearance in the event." | | In last issue's Alumni Spotlight, we goofed by identifying Ernie Ceberio '90 as 'Edward'. We have offered apologies to Ernie and printed this correction here, and on social media. - [Ed.] | | '85 reunited, and it feels so good! A Great Catholic School Story
- besides Our Own
| | |
Out this month, Anthony DePalma has written and published On This Ground, a chronicle of how Newark's St. Benedict's Prep ("the toughest Prep School in America") transformed from announced closure in June 1972 (chaining the doors as the graduating class left the building) to become one of America's most successful inner city education programs through monk dedication and student resilience.
What's the difference between St. Benedict's and Hudson Catholic? As far as we can tell, only a better Promo Man.

Family Health Care Alternative
A Christian-based alternative to healthcare coverage, a community of Christians is paying one another's medical bills.

| | Federal Tax Credits for Scholarship | | Legislation passed in Congress in 2025 established a new Federal Tax Credit for Scholarships (FTCS). Beginning in 2027, it allows individuals to claim a 100% federal tax credit up to $1,700, or for married couples, up to $3,400, for contributions to eligible Scholarship Granting Organizations (SGOs) that fund K-12 education, inclusive of private school tuition and fees. This takes such donations from a deduction at partial value, to a credit at full value, allowing taxpayers to redirect a portion of their federal tax liability to support educational opportunities. This educational tax credit distinguishes itself from existing educational credits that apply only to higher education tuition. It is possible that Hudson Catholic could experience a benefit of this, in turn, through increased support from Scholarship Granting Organizations that could expect to reap increased giving from their supporters. | | |
There is no doubt that Catholic schools provide a stabilizing influence for families and the communities they serve. Keeping our schools strong today and ensuring their future are two of the main reasons to choose to invest in educational endowment funds.
Family Endowment Funds can transform Catholic causes like the Lasallian mission at Hudson Catholic forever because they are permanent charitable funds that endow weekly, monthly or annual giving to the cause you choose, and continue after death to provide ongoing financial support.
The benefits include perpetual giving (providing annual gifts to your chosen Catholic organization(s) now and forever); alignment with your values (you decide which Catholic causes it supports and how your fund is distributed); flexibility and ease of establishment (start your fund with cash, securities, IRA distributions, or estate gifts); and, tax advantages (your contributions may provide immediate and long-term tax benefits).
You can start your Family Endowment Fund in six easy steps. First, define your criteria and values (choose the causes that matter most to you and your family). Second, select your beneficiaries (Hudson Catholic, and any other Catholic causes you prefer to support, such as your parish, the payment cycle, and if you want such payments to continue after death). Third, choose your fund amount and source (decide how much to invest, using this simple formula -- amount of annual donation X 20) -- to calculate how large your fund needs to be to generate a 5% annual distribution and provide forever support. Fourth, working with the Catholic Foundation of Eastern Pennsylvania that administers Family Endowment Funds for Catholic causes, prepare your formal agreement containing your intentions, so your wishes may be carried out. Fifth, grow your fund over time (adding gifts throughout your life and through your estate plan). Sixth, distribute gifts annually (the Catholic Foundation ensures your chosen organizations receive gifts now and annually after your death).
Funding sources suggested for starting a Family Endowment Fund now include cash, appreciated securities, and/or an IRA Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD), whereas best sources for adding to the Fund over time include gifts in a will; life insurance or investment account beneficiary; memorial gift included in an obituary, and/or IRA, 401K and Donor Advised Fund beneficiary.
If you would like to start a conversation about endowing your family legacy to benefit Hudson Catholic, contact advancement@hudsoncatholic.org at your convenieince.

"When I was diagnosed with cancer, my youngest daughter looked at me and said the words that changed everything: 'Find a Way'. Those words carried me through treatment, through challenges, and into a mission bigger than myself. I live by them. I teach by them. And I hope they help someone else through their hardest day."
