MAYOR'S UPDATE

From the desk of Mayor Rika Levin

Last week, the Ossining Youth Bureau hosted a "Meet and Greet" session for the 2025 Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) participants and the organizations where they will be working this summer. This program, which is a source of pride for our community, is designed for youth between the ages of 14 and 21, offering career exploration opportunities and paid work experiences each summer in Ossining. By participating in structured projects and work-based opportunities, Ossining’s youth are not only gaining valuable experience but also contributing to the growth and development of our community.

At last week’s event, the OYB’s SYEP youth workers met with their summer employers, learned about their roles, and participated in interviews. They also had the opportunity to network with one another and meet other community members.

Thank you to New York State Senator Pete Harckham and Assemblywoman Dana Levenberg for joining and speaking to our participants. Your words of wisdom to the group were incredibly impactful.

Despite a brief but windy summer squall, Ossining's annual fireworks display was a spectacular and well-attended event. Each year, Ossining hosts a celebration of our Nation's independence, featuring fireworks that thousands of people can view safely.

I want to extend my deepest gratitude to everyone whose efforts and spirit brought our 2025 Riverjam and fireworks spectacular to life at the Louis Engel Waterfront on July 3. From the Town staff, Recreation & Parks team, and The Greater Ossining Chamber of Commerce, who orchestrated the perfect blend of live music, delicious food trucks, and seamless logistics, to the Public Works and police departments, who coordinated traffic and ensured our sidewalks and streets were safe and accessible—your dedication allowed our community to gather and celebrate in harmony. The evening’s stunning fireworks display would not have been possible without your meticulous planning and commitment.

I would also like to thank our volunteer firefighters from Ossining, Croton, and Millwood, as well as our volunteer EMS team. Their training, presence, and readiness underscored the safety net that allowed families, neighbors, and friends to enjoy the festivities with peace of mind.

Finally, I must applaud the spirit shown by our residents and local merchants—the heart of our vibrant village. Your enthusiasm, patience during road closures, and support for local vendors and performers made the evening warm, welcoming, and unforgettable. Events like Riverjam and the Fireworks showcase how much can be achieved together when every hand plays a part. A special shoutout to the Town Historian and Supervisor Feldman, who this year included a reading of the Declaration of Independence, bringing together our Girl Scouts, Town Justices, and other local officials for this special moment.

I look forward to many more celebrations that bring us closer together as a community. Thank you, Ossining!

Unfortunately, each year, we also receive complaints about fireworks being set off illegally, which causes distress to neighbors and their pets, who may not appreciate the loud noise and potential fire risks associated with the unlawful use of fireworks. Please remember that most types of fireworks, including firecrackers, Roman candles, bottle rockets, and aerial spinners, are illegal for consumers to use in NYS and that possession, sale, or use of fireworks other than sparkling devices without a permit is illegal.

Due to inclement weather, we’ve moved to the Community Center!

A Village Hidden In New York's Hudson Valley Is A Cute Riverside Gem With Hillside Views And Quaint Shops

This week’s meeting will be held at 16 Croton and will begin at 7:30PM on Wednesday, July 9th, 2025.

We will start with a Special Meeting to pay bills, adopt the residential construction moratorium in RDD and SP-N zoning districts, and adopt a short revision to Section 8 of the LOSAP resolution (removes reference to 2027 with reference to the lookback period and refines language around lookback eligibility for those who become disabled and/or pass away during the lookback period).

The Work Session agenda will be as follows:

  • We will start with an update on the bids and funding for the Multi-Modal Transportation Hub.
  • Valerie Monastra, AICP- Principal Planner- Nelson Pope Voorhiswill join us for the next (3) agenda items:
  • We will circle back to our discussions on the SP-N potential re-zoning: this is a project we have been working on since last summer, and have spent some time to square the community feedback from June 2024 with BOT concerns about parking.
  • Valerie will also lead a discussion of RDD Revisions.
  • Valerie, Karen D'Attore, Village Manager, and Maddi Zachacz, Assistant Village Manager, will update the BOT on the process by which we will be finalizing the administration of the ETPA Opt-Out program.
  • At the last work session, we heard about the Harriet Tubman Byway Revolution. Because of some outstanding questions, we are bringing it back for a discussion with the full BOT.
  • Finally, Corporation Counsel Stuart Kahan will present a Cabaret application for VIP Sports Bar (12 Croton Ave).
