Big Advocacy Accomplishment: Unanimous support for Metastatic Breast Cancer Access to Care Act!

For the first time since its original introduction in 2019, all eleven members of Virginia’s Congressional Delegation have signed on to cosponsor H.R. 2048, The Metastatic Breast Cancer Access to Care Act! It is a major accomplishment to have our entire bipartisan delegation cosponsor this bill during the first year of the 119th Congress, and it would not have been possible without our wonderful advocates. VBCF advocates wrote, called, and met in person with our U.S. Representatives all year long to let them know the importance of passing this legislation that would eliminate the arbitrary waiting periods for Medicare and Social Security benefits for patients living with metastatic breast cancer. What’s next? H.R. 2048 is steadily gaining momentum in Congress with 187 cosponsors to date. VBCF will continue to support the bill’s passage.

Hormones and Breast Cancer

With recent news on a new study saying that hormonal birth control increases the risk of breast cancer by 24% and the FDA removing the “black box” warning on hormone replacement therapy for use in menopause, the use of hormones and their connection to breast cancer have been everywhere. Our take? Don’t panic. Remember, social media is designed for engagement, and nothing gets people more engaged than fear. To get a more full and accurate picture of the connection between hormonal birth control and breast cancer, check out this great article by KFF Health News. For more information on why the FDA is changing its stance on hormone replacement therapy for menopause, check out the blog we wrote last year on the topic when it really started gaining steam.
