Professor Jack Rasmus

(Emeritus, St. Mary's College, Moraga)

How and Why is the U.S. Declining?

Professor Rasmus is the author of numerous books on economics and geopolitics. His new book is titled "The Twilight of American Imperialism." He will present his analysis that the United States is in a stage of decline due to rising costs and lagging revenues. This explains attempts to withdraw from Ukraine and NATO, cuts to NGOs and foreign aid, tariff wars to raise revenues, and oil grabs such as is occurring in Venezuela.

Rasmus will also discuss US efforts to restrict and exclude China from western hemisphere markets and resources while rearming US empire allies in Asia. He will describe the effort to boost a slowing US domestic economy with lower interest rates and reductions in debt interest. And finally, he will explain recent global and domestic events from the perspective of an overextended empire that’s becoming desperate and resorting to force to maintain itself.

The League of Women Voters of Minnesota and the League of Women Voters of the United States issued the following joint statement in response to the federal immigration enforcement and escalation of federal military activity in Minnesota:

“Minnesota is grieving and on edge. The growing presence and activities of federal immigration enforcement agents have terrorized, suppressed, and irreparably harmed our community. At a moment when Minnesotans deserve transparency, accountability, care, and calm leadership, the President has instead chosen to escalate fear by threatening to invoke the Insurrection Act and to place federal military forces on standby.

“The League opposes any illegal or unconstitutional use of the Insurrection Act, as positioning or threatening to deploy active-duty troops undermines public safety and reflects intimidation, suppression, and misuse of executive power.

“Minnesotans have endured profound trauma in recent years and have repeatedly shown that lasting safety comes from people power: communities coming together to reject hatred, violence, and mistrust, and to demand justice through democratic means. Militarization undermines that work. It escalates tension, erodes trust, and puts residents at greater risk.

“The League of Women Voters calls on Congress to exercise its constitutional oversight authority and investigate these threats of federal overreach, as well as DHS, ICE, and CBP use-of-force. We urge the public to reject efforts to normalize the use of federal military force as a response to civil unrest or tragedy.

“The League stands with Minnesotans in affirming that democracy is built by the people, not imposed through fear or force. We strongly condemn any unwarranted federal immigration enforcement and military deployment or threat of deployment in Minnesota or anywhere in the United States.”

NEW THIS WEEK:

SHIRIN ALI (SLATE.com): Minneapolis Is Just the Beginning. Here's what to do when ICE comes to your neighborhood

"This is part of a series of on-the-ground reports from Minneapolis.

Over the past few weeks, previously unthinkable horrors have unfolded in Minnesota as federal agents working for Immigration and Customs Enforcement have shot Renee Nicole Good in the head, killing her, and arrested a 5-year-old boy just as he was arriving home from school. Erin Maye Quade is a Minnesota state senator who has now witnessed countless instances of federal agents arresting and detaining her constituents. This week, Maye Quade decided it was time to put out a blunt warning for the rest of America in the form of a TikTok video: “There may be people outside of Minnesota who are thinking: When this comes to my state, I’m white, or a U.S. citizen, or I live in a suburb or rural area, or a neighborhood with few or no immigrants, and this is something I won’t experience or see,” the senator said. “I’m here to dispel that myth for you. That is not the case.”

IBRAHIM MAJED: The Funeral of Hegemony

How America's Decision to Attack Iran Would Be Strategic Suicide

"An American attack on Iran would not be a limited military operation, a punitive strike, or a calibrated act of deterrence. It would represent a strategic rupture, a point at which accumulated American power begins converting itself into cascading liabilities. This is not a moral argument, nor is it a humanitarian one, it is more like a balance-sheet assessment of empire."

World BEYOND War has

a DIVESTMENT campaign!

About the Campaign

Grassroots-led war divestment campaigns are springing up all over the world, from students organizing to divest university endowments, to municipalities and states coming together to divest public pension funds. Divestment means organizing to remove public and private assets from weapons manufacturers, military contractors, and war profiteers.

Public pension and retirement funds especially are often invested, directly and indirectly, in weapons companies. Teachers and other public servants whose interests lie with promoting human needs have their retirement security tied up with maintaining or enlarging the war industry. Every dollar currently invested in weapons and war is a dollar that could be better spent on job creation, education, housing, healthcare, food security, and so much more.

War profiteering is largely normalized today. We’re working to stigmatize the war machine. World BEYOND War assists divestment campaigns led by our chapters, affiliates, other coalitions, and individuals around the world.
