NUTRITION AND PRODUCTIVITY TIPS FOR THE WORKPLACE
It's nutrition month! Amid an echo pandemic of poor mental health, the world of promoting physical activity and nutrition has taken a backseat for some, however, our mental well-being does not exist in isolation. Poor nutrition has been linked to mental health outcomes, including depression, affecting our overall performance. To understand the link, an article by CAMH points out that the nutrients we take form the building blocks of our brains. When it comes to productivity, according to Thrive Global, the World Health Organization (WHO) reports that “adequate nutrition can raise productivity levels by 20 percent on average" and the International Labour Association indicates that "poor diet on the job is costing countries around the world up to 20 percent in lost productivity." So, if you are looking to better support nutrition in your organization, nutrition month is the time. Here are a few tips to get you started for on-site work environments.

  • Create a healthy eating meeting policy that ensures any catered meetings or events have healthy options available
  • Start a Fruity Friday program where employees alternate bringing in a plate of fresh fruit or veggies to share
  • Make sure vending machines and any on-site food options include healthy options
  • Make sure there is a space for employees to store and / or prepare lunches and snacks (e.g., a clean and accessible fridge)
  • Send reminders to encourage employees to take time to have lunch and snacks (no eating at your desk!)
