A Thank you to the Staff of Duval Elementary
"My mom teaches at Duval Elementary and they had a spaghetti dinner night tonight for families. I brought my boys and it was such a fun treat! The staff were so welcoming and kind as always and I loved watching them interact with all the students.
I think the best part was that they opened the library for a free book grab. Kids got to go down to the library after dinner and choose up to FIVE free books to take home.

Historical Tidbit:
Cowbells
|
When I was growing up my maternal grandfather, Guy Baker, use to call his corner of the world “Cowbell Corner.” Over the years I used the term myself, thinking the saying was quite quaint. He also owned an old cow bell (pictured here). I never remembered him saying why he called the intersection by that name but over the years I formed my own opinion as to why he did.
When he was growing up the family had a milk cow; she might have had a cowbell to locate her if she wandered away. As the years went by Mr. Baker bought his own home on the corner of Routes 105 and 106, not far from the home where he was born, thus making this “his corner.”
My paternal grandfather, Clyde Bosworth Sr. happened to have a dairy farm next door to "Grampa" Baker's new home leaving one to wonder if perhaps in the early mornings he would hear the melodious tinkle as cows moved slowly from one grazing spot to another as they left the barn. Or maybe around sundown, when the herd was being brought home for milking.
Farmers of the world have been belling their cows for thousands of years. In America, except for a few remote spots, the old and time-honored tinkle of the cowbell is now mute and almost obscure. Today's cows are mechanized and data-processed and the modern dairyman knows where every cow is at all times.
The traditionally prudent New England dairy farmer sometimes fashioned, with his frugal fingers, bells out of scraps of metal, which he then shaped with a hammer. History records the first commercial manufacturer of cowbells as being the Barton Bell Company, founded in 1793 in East Hampton, Connecticut.

Baby Birds, Their Nests
& Creating with Clay
Wednesday February 5th
10:30 - 11:30a
Whitman Public Library - Community Room
Audubon Preschool Program for ages 3-6. P
articipants will observe many different types of real bird’s nests from out nest collection. This will allow them to feel and learn about the natural materials that birds use to make nests. After listening to a story about a mother robin caring for her nest and observing the real nests, each child-caregiver pair will then make their own nest out of natural material.
The nest will be self-contained in a paper bowl. Once the nest is made, each child will use air dried clay to sculpt several eggs and one parent bird to place in their nest. Each group will get to keep their nest and once the clay dries, they will be able to paint the eggs and birds.
This program is supported in part by a grant from the Whitman Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.

I would like to wish a Happy 50th birthday to GEORGE M. FERRO JR.
George was hired a Whitman Middle School Principal in 2004. He began his career as a teacher and coach for the New Bedford Public Schools until he moved into Administration in the role of Assistant Principal for the Westport Community Schools in the 1999. George was named the MetLife, NASSP MA Middle School Principal of the Year in 2009 and also served as the President of the Massachusetts School Administrators Association (MSAA) in 2016-2017. Even though he’s an administrator, he’s a pretty good guy.
THANK YOU GEORGE FOR CONTINUING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE AND BEING AN IMPACT IN THE LIVES OF ALL STUDENTS IN THE WHITMAN-HANSON COMMUNITY!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MY FRIEND.
ENJOY THE WEEKEND!!!

Speaking Your Truth
“Living with integrity means: Not settling for less than what you know you deserve in your relationships. Asking for what you want and need from others. Speaking your truth, even though it might create conflict or tension. Behaving in ways that are in harmony with your personal values. Making choices based on what you believe, and not what others believe.” ~ Barbara De Angelis
“Truth without love is brutality, and love without truth is hypocrisy.”~ Warren Wiersbe
“Honesty is more than not lying. It is truth telling, truth speaking, truth living, and truth loving.”
~ James E. Faust
