Dear Friend,
October is my favorite month of the year. Besides the beginning of cooler weather with stunning sunsets and the native plant planting season kicking off, it's also the time the fall newsletter arrives and the BCLT calendars come out! And this election year there is a bond measure that would create an opportunity for us to improve parts of Bolsa Chica long-term. So, please support Prop 4!
Until next time, see you on the trails.
ps. I can't forget Halloween; another reason October is the best :) Happy Halloween!

Fall "Music from the Mesa" Newsletter
|
Our #144 "Music from the Mesa" printed newsletter is now available to read online! Inside you will find a deep dive on important topics to Bolsa Chica, learn about our current projects and programs, and more.
This quarterly newsletter is a great introduction to the Land Trust and the important work we are doing to accomplish our mission. The mission of the Bolsa Chica Land Trust is the acquisition, preservation, and restoration of all of Bolsa Chica and the education of the public to its natural wonders and cultural significance.
Please share it and spread your love of Bolsa Chica!

For Bolsa Chica, Prop 4 will create the opportunity for us to request funding to complete the restoration of nesting habitat for the next 25 generations of California Least Terns and Western Snowy Plovers.
Proposition 4, the Parks, Environment, Energy, and Water Bond Measure, will be on your ballot in this November’s election. Prop. 4 is critical to funding important projects for drinking water security and fire resiliency, for drought preparedness and sea-level rise resiliency, and for habitat protection and restoration projects in California. Prop. 4, if passed by the voters, will go a long way to protect the fragile habitats, endangered species, the natural landscapes that we love, and our communities we call home.

2025 'Wings Over Bolsa' calendars are here!
Filled with beautiful photographs, all taken here at Bolsa Chica, the 2025 calendars are due to fly in on October 1. Created with photographs from 20 generous photographers, the calendar highlights some of the amazing wildlife that we all love. Our fabulous Calendar Committee goes the extra mile: creating educational captions for the larger photos and matching the photos on each page with the animals you may see that month at the Reserve.
Wings Over Bolsa brings the natural wonders of the Reserve into your home or office for you to enjoy. With your donation of $20, you will receive one calendar; a donation of $80 will get you five calendars – so you can share your support of Bolsa Chica and its beauty with your friends. Shipping costs are included.
A huge “Thank You!” to each one of the photographers for sharing these amazing images with us!

October's Bird of the Month: Great Horned Owl
The Great Horned Owl has often been seen as a symbol of wisdom, so it is appropriate that the Huntington Beach Library has had a resident owl family living on its roof for many years. This large raptor is nocturnal and hunts for prey such as squirrels, rabbits, mice, birds, and even frogs, fish, and snakes. Silent wing feathers and large eyes with excellent
vision help make the GHO a very successful hunter. These owls are
found year-round throughout North America and are considered to be a numerous and stable population.
22” long; 44” wingspan; 3.1 lbs
