IEC 61850 is an international standard for communication in power generation facilities and substations. The goal of this standard is to integrate all of the protection, control, measurement, and monitoring functions within a substation, and to provide the means for high-speed substation protection applications, interlocking and intertripping.
IEC 61850 uses object-oriented methods to provide logical communications between substations, primary process equipment, and secondary devices. Using object-oriented concepts, IEC 61850 abstracts the information models from the communication details.
Walker supports electric utilities through the integration of the IEC 61850 standard, most recently with a blanket order for hundreds of Circuit Breaker Interface Cabinets (CBI).
The CBI panels allow seamless implementation of the IEC 61850 substation automation standard including digital tripping through ethernet via Generic Object Oriented Substation Events (GOOSE) messages as well as distributed automation through Manufacturing Message Specification (MMS) messages to limit external DC and AC wiring. The primary purpose of the CBI Cabinet is to operate the circuit breaker under automated / manual command and operate the circuit breaker disconnect switches.
The following photographs highlight different stages of production on the CBI Cabinets.
