DID YOU KNOW

Diocesan Offices

The offices of The Diocese of Southern Virginia have recently moved from 11827 Canon Blvd. Suite 101 to 11832 Rock Landing Dr. Suite 100, in Newport News. The new offices are much smaller and much less expensive. Because of the smaller space and limited storage The Diocese needed to sort through many items they had put away in closets.

The Bishop's Closet which was open to churches at Annual Council was one of these caches of stored items. It contains vestments and goods no longer needed by churches or which came from closed churches.

Mary Lovell was able to help them inventory and sort an entire room of church goods. Churches around The Diocese were able to choose items for free! St. Peter's; Trinity; Portsmouth; St. Bride's, Glebe; Suffolk and churches on the Eastern Shore were among those who benefitted. Keep you eyes peeled for our new/old treasures!

Recycling

The City of Chesapeake is not currently providing recycling services. If you place items used at church in the blue bins or small blue cans some parishioners will pick them up and recycle them at their Virginia Beach homes. Please do no place items in the large blue recycle can as that is now picked up as trash.

Churches without permanent clergy

There are currently more than 17 churches in the Diocese without permanent clergy and additional priests are expected to retire this summer. No wonder it is difficult to find supply priests! Make sure you thank the Clergy who are kindly helping us out.

Rite 2

As is our custom, we began celebrating with the Rite 2 version of the Mass following Corpus Christi. Using Rite 2 allows us to remain familiar with both this authorized version of the liturgy and the music which is paired with it.

It is also helpful as many of our supply priests are well versed in Rite 2 language.

We will revert to Rite 1 at Advent, so you will be using Rite 2 and the accompanying Mass settings in four months.

SUPPLY PRIESTS JUNE THROUGH AUGUST

Thanks to the wonderful Priests and especially Bob Byles who are willing to fill in at

SUMMER CHANGES

Choir Practice and The Rosary

Thursday night choir practice is suspended from July 6 - September 7.

This allows time for vacations and the opportunity to enjoy the summer.

A rehearsal is held at 10am on Sunday morning. All are welcome.

The Rosary group will also take a summer break from July 6 - September 7.

Please continue to say the Rosary at home.

If you need a Rosary or materials please see Florence or Mary Lovell.

FORWARD PLANNING

The Vestry is working with the Diocese and a consultant to prepare

St. Bride's for our next priest.

Meanwhile, know that we are moving ahead, and have the support of the

Diocese and the Bishop.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Here are some volunteer positions available at St. Bride's.

  1. Torch bearers - We eliminated the torches during COVID to assist with social distancing. We want to re-instate them in September. In order to do so we need at least 4 - 6 people who are willing to serve once or twice a month as torch bearers.
  2. Is anyone interested in being an usher? This is a great introductory job, but very important. You would greet worshippers, hand out bulletins, gather offerings and assist at communion, in a rotation once a month.
  3. Does anyone have a talent for or an interest in flower arranging? Lynn and Mary Lovell are arranging on a regular basis. Kathy is available as a substitute. Would anyone else be interested in exploring their flowery side?
  4. There are always small jobs like digging holes, cleaning and organizing or wiping down wood work. Let us know if you are bored - we can fix that!

THANK YOU

Thank you to Bob Byles for ability presiding at Morning Prayer on Sundays when we have no priest.

Thank you to David Greenfield who removed the broken microwave and fit the remaining microwave on the shelf.

Thank you to The Vestry for giving up a morning to meet with our consultant to formulate interview questions to ask priest candidates.

Thank you to Jon Gower and David Greenfield for keeping the property in great shape this summer.

Thank you to Steve and Florence Cupschalk who put the trash our every Thursday.
