Historical Tidbit:
Standish Manor School
Halifax, Massachusetts
(from a small handbook at the Museum of Halifax)
A Special School for Girls
Halifax - near Plymouth - Massachusetts
Miss Alice M. Myers, Principal
Hazel G. Cullingford, Assistant Principal
PART 2
Characteristics of Standish Manor
In these days of specialization, why not the Special School exclusively for girls? Why not a home school for girls who are unable to keep pace with others of their own age? Standish Manor meets the needs of such girls.
Some have been so situated that they have had only the advantages of country schools. Others have not been sufficiently strong during their childhood to keep up with their class in public or even private school; some, because of illness, have had to sacrifice school work entirely. When these girls meet and associate with friends who have known no delay in their studies, they seem to sense at once their own deficiency. Perhaps this discovery stimulates them to extra effort that they may catch up, but in so doing over study and subsequent strain may result. On the other hand they may become discouraged and not recognize their own ability to do good work because their friends can do better. For girls of these types, a special school is particularly satisfactory for then they can progress as fast as their strength and ability will permit. A few years spent in a school such as Standish Manor prepares a student to enter a higher school or to return home happy and ready to take her place with other useful members of society.
Teachers who understand the Individual Girl
When the Special School is further enhanced by an intimate home life, it becomes possible for the teachers thus closely associated with their pupils to develop in them possibilities frequently overlooked in larger groups. All parents value the sympathetic, "homey" atmosphere of this Special School for Girls.
The teachers have keen insight into the slowly awakening physical, mental and moral consciousness of these girls, and are enabled not only to direct but to develop strong lines of character. The delicate, sensitive girl is therefore no longer timid and uncertain of her choice in life, for she has come into her own; a clearly defined personality is hers.
Many advantages exist at Standish Manor which are not to be found in other schools because this school is planned in every detail for the special girl. A richer, fuller, home life gives the girl at Standish Manor every possible encouragement to progress. The special training of the teachers fits them precisely for their different lines of work. In addition young women companions, rather than teachers, inspire the student's admiration and confidence.

Climate Can-Do:
South Shore Recycling Cooperative
To address the climate, Massachusetts recently elected Melissa Hoffer as its first Climate Chief in the Office of Climate Innovation and Resilience. The office in charge of resources and authority available to the Governor and executive department to advance climate change innovation, and resilience policies.
At the local level, South Shore Recycling Cooperative (SSRC) is a resource. The SSRC is a voluntary association of South Shore municipalities established in 1998. It helps its member municipalities improve their recycling programs, and reduce the quantity, toxicity and cost of disposal in a number of ways. Some include maintenance of solid waste programs, educating residents about waste management, and advocating for funding and regulations that minimize waste while maximizing recovery of useful materials. Their bimonthly newsletter highlights local opportunities to make a difference. Subscribe on ssrcoop.com. Find out more about the Office of Climate Innovation and Resilience

An After–St. Patrick’s Day Mingle
Supported by the Halifax Local Cultural Council and the Mass Cultural Council, the Halifax Council on Aging was able to host a fantastic event at Nonnies Italian Grille on March 24th! Longtime New England musician/author Matt York performed songs of Johnny Cash and told stories of Cash’s career from the 1950s to his passing in 2003. He discussed Cash’s emergence as a groundbreaking artist, his marriage to June Carter, and many of his other career highlights!
At this event was also the special opportunity to acknowledge Josephine (Jo) Schofield for her dedication to our community. Her lengthy years of service were spent on the Halifax COA Board, and over ten of those were as Chairperson. She ran many events, along with her “humor” to keep everyone on their toes! Jo was awarded a Massachusetts Citation for her service to the Halifax community.
|
|
Senator Michael Brady brought cheers as he sang, offered an Irish Blessing, and awarded Jo for her dedication to the community. State Representative Josh Cutler’s Liaison and Legislative Aid, State Senator Susan Moran, and State Representative Kathleen LaNatra’s office also offered kind words and a Citation from the Commonwealth.
The Halifax Council on Aging wishes everyone to stay well and to keep the spirit of community within your hearts forever!

Childhood, Children, Childlike.
This week I wallow in the memory of it. Being a child, being childlike, playing with my children, playing with neighborhood children. As the weather gets warmer I hear their joyful shouts, playing nearby, through my open window. What a gorgeous sound!
“Sweater, n. Garment worn by child when its mother is feeling chilly.” ~ Ambrose Bierce, The Unabridged Devil's Dictionary
“There's nothing more contagious than the laughter of young children; it doesn't even have to matter what they're laughing about.”
~ Criss Jami, Killosophy
“When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.” ~ Margery Williams Bianco, The Velveteen Rabbit
“Life is a process during which one initially gets less and less dependent, independent, and then more and more dependent.” ~ Mokokoma Mokhonoana

When I was a child, I worried a lot! As a parent, I worried more. Time now to play! So if you see me hooting and skipping, pay no mind, I'm just making up for lost playtime. ~ Jacquie
