We are reviewing 14 video interviews + notes from about 20 collateral meetings and vendor chats. We'll have a more comprehensive review of Legalweek in a few days.

But for now, a few general themes we saw, plus our video chat with Doug Austin, editor of eDiscovery Today.

16 March 2026 (Washington, DC) - The dominant themes at Legalweek 2026 centered on the transition from "hypothetical" generative AI to operational, agentic AI, accompanied by intense focuses on AI governance, data management, and industry consolidation. The overarching message was that the legal industry has moved past the initial excitement of AI and is now focused on practical implementation, risk mitigation, and validation.

We saw 4 key themes:

1. From "Chat" to "Agentic" AI: the primary technological shift was moving from simply "chatting" with generative AI to deploying Agentic AI - systems that can autonomously pursue multi-step goals, rather than just answering prompts.

2. Agentic Operations (Agentic Ops): multiple sessions explored building self-orchestrating legal departments, where AI agents handle complex workflows such as intake, triage, and contract review.

3. Rise of HAR: the methodology is shifting from Traditional Assisted Review (TAR) towards GenAI Human Assisted Review (HAR), with a focus on validating AI reasoning and output.

4. "Unsolvable" Data and Modern eDiscovery: the explosion of data from collaboration platforms (Teams, Slack) and AI-generated artifacts has made traditional eDiscovery workflows insufficient.

There were other themes and subject matter issues, too, which we'll discuss in our more comprehensive review:

  • AI governance and risk management

  • Defensible frameworks

  • Data security

  • Modern data management

  • Early strategic intelligence

  • Redefining legal value and business models, which includes insourcing and ALSPs

And much discussed: legal tech consolidation. There is a "shakeout" underway. With high funding at the top and declining valuations among smaller players, there is a strong expectation of increased consolidation and acquisitions by better-capitalized, established players.

On the last day of the trade show, we had a chance to interview Doug Austin. Doug is a well-established member of the eDiscovery ecosystem, having over 30 years of experience providing eDiscovery best practices, legal technology consulting and technical project management services to numerous commercial and government clients.

Doug has published a daily blog since 2010 and has written numerous articles and white papers. His current blog is eDiscovery Today and it is a "must read" if you want to follow this industry. He appears at all the major eDiscovery conferences and trade shows.

In this chat with our boss, Gregory Bufithis, Doug talks about his impressions of Legalweek. Among the things he notes:

  • a lot of people think they know AI or know about AI, but they're just scratching the surface, not yet reaching a level of AI literacy

  • we are still challenged by adoption issues, only 17% of firms using it in all or most of their cases

  • yes, AI is important, but we don't talk enough about other challenges in e-discovery, like the modern data challenge of all the different data sources that we have to address in e-discovery today

Doug always offers a fresh perspective. It's a great watch, well worth your time, and we edited it down to 6 minutes to give you Doug's major points:
