Fenwick Foundation Brings Smiles
When you speak with Fenwick Foundation’s executive director, Alex Gorny, it’s hard not to be impressed with the sheer scope of the organization and the work that they’ve accomplished in their nearly twelve years of existence. Founded in 2011, the organization is a 501(c)(3) whose mission is to “improv[e the] quality of life, health, and wellbeing in ways that are not addressed or ‘below the radar.’”

While the Fenwick Foundation continues to make community outings accessible, they have expanded their programs to include a gardening partnership, a dental program, and a vision program. The dental program in particular has made a huge impact on Fellowship Square residents. The clinic offers oral care to those who are uninsured and makes dental care accessible.

Enhancing Collaboration and Preparedness in Crisis
Fellowship Square’s CEO, Christy Zeitz, and Senior Director, Judy Singer, held a ‘Crisis Communications’ training session for staff and board members to review policies and procedures that address potential crises and emergencies, should they arise. This training was designed to enhance our preparedness and strengthen collaboration in times of uncertainty.

High Performance Matters
Last month, we held our annual Fellowship Square business meeting. The meeting reviewed many highlights and accomplishments from this past year and took a look ahead at where we are going. Fellowship Square is making good progress on our Five-Year Strategic Plan and we continue to seek new opportunities for future development projects, new partners and more volunteers to support programs and services that improve resident life by creating new internal processes that streamline operations and increase efficiencies.

Like many non-profits, we follow seven core pillars that reflect best practices in operational strengths and mission advancement:

Pillar 1: Courageous and adaptive leadership
Pillar 2: Disciplined, people-focused management
Pillar 3: Well-designed and well-implemented programs and strategies
Pillar 4: Financial health and sustainability
Pillar 5: A culture that values learning
Pillar 6: Internal monitoring for continuous improvement
Pillar 7: External evaluation for mission effectiveness

I hope that you recognize these attributes in your interactions with Fellowship Square. We believe that these pillars provide us with the best opportunity for attracting and retaining top talent, delivering the best experience to our residents, utilizing Board members and volunteers effectively while garnering financial support from individuals, businesses and other funders.

If you have not yet experienced our mission in action – through volunteerism or event participation – I encourage you to get involved and help us continue to make a difference in the lives of older adults. Your input, knowledge, time and financial support are always needed and greatly appreciated.
In gratitude,
Christy Zeitz

RESIDENT LIFE
Men’s Health Awareness Month

Men's Health Month brings an understanding of preventable health problems and encourages early detection and treatment of disease.
In June, Hunters Woods Fellowship House organized a Men's Health Awareness workshop. It featured two distinct programs aimed at promoting healthy eating habits. The first program, entitled "Eating Well Clinic: Men, Take Control of your Health," was conducted by Lisa Sharp, who shared valuable insights on maintaining a nutritious diet. Immediately following, Binbin Yang, a Community Health Specialist from the Fairfax County Health Department, led the second program that provided crucial information about stroke symptoms. Together, these two programs offered important information to achieve better health and awareness.

Pre-Med Students Present Program Focused on Men's Health
Largo Landing Fellowship House residents enjoyed an interactive presentation on men's health and the impact of eating healthy foods as we age. Pre-med students Trenton and Tyren Brown discussed the effects of diet on both mental and physical health and answered questions from residents. The seminar was accompanied by an array of healthy foods picked out by our volunteers.

Culture Day: Sharing Traditions
Hunters Woods Fellowship House celebrated its diversity by hosting a Culture Day event at the nearby Reston Community Center. Resident performances included singing, dancing and even a fashion show. Traditions from around the world were shared and celebrated, including some specialty foods, bringing residents closer together through cultural understanding. Visit the event album for more photos of the day's festivities.
