Volunteer of the Month

Congratulations to Reagan, YVCHR's Volunteer of the Month! As a member of our Youth Advisory Board (YAB), a leader in his YVC school club and part of our Media Production Team, he is invested in YVC's mission and always eager to serve others. Here is what he had to say about his YVC experience:

The thing I enjoy most about YVC is the feeling of fulfillment after every project. When I am proud of the work I’m doing, I work more efficiently with enthusiasm and exude a joy that impacts those around me as well.

During this year's YVC Summit in Virginia Beach, we participated in a poverty simulation. We were each placed into a scenario and had to try and make ends meet for the hypothetical month. At the beginning of this event, I thought I would make it through with ease, but I was quickly corrected. I got evicted, couldn’t pay utilities and couldn’t even get a job. This opened my eyes to the challenges that low-income families face and has allowed me to view people in similar situations with more grace.

One recent project that stands out to me is Challenger Baseball. During the summer, I worked with a variety of neurodiverse kids and their parents on swimming and swim safety skills. Many of these families also participate in Challenger Baseball, a program that offers baseball games for neurodiverse and disabled individuals. Their excitement to see me after a lapse of a few months was special and reaffirmed that the relationship I built with them was something special.

The Gift that Keeps on Giving

Research supports the positive benefits of volunteering--particularly among youth! This article outlines the many ways that serving others can boost mental health and improve physical health. Youth who serve are also 19% more likely to graduate from college, 50% less likely to abuse drugs or alcohol, and 27% more likely to be hired for a job. For these reasons--and so many more!--we make it our mission to engage youth in team-based service experiences that build work and life skills while inspiring a lifetime ethic of service!

Our goal for the 2024-2025 program year is to engage 1,400 youth (ages 11-18) in 15,000 hours of service. That translates into $500,700 in the local economy through volunteerism. Every dollar donated to YVCHR is reinvested right here in Hampton Roads, which means your impact is multiplied as youth discover the best in themselves while serving others!

Please consider a year-end gift to help us reach our $15,000 goal in honor of YVCHR's 15-year anniversary! Visit www.yvchr.org/donate to make your tax-deducible contribution.

2025 Canstructure Competition

Calling all K-12 students! Youth Volunteer Corps of Hampton Roads is recruiting teams of elementary, middle and high school students to participate in this year’s Canstructure Competition, a STEM-inspired, team-based challenge that will help provide thousands of meals to local families experiencing food insecurity. Each year, this event activates youth from across our community to help address the issue of hunger while also providing an outlet for their creativity.

What is a CANstructure? A canstructure is a unique work of art that is created by collecting hundreds—sometimes thousands!—of canned food items, which are then used to design and build a 3-dimensional structure that relates to this year’s theme: Connecting Worlds Through Literature!

How do teams compete? Teams will meet to plan and brainstorm their canstructure design and to determine their strategy for collecting canned food donations. Teams may conduct food drives, solicit donations from local businesses or raise funds to purchase the cans needed to build their structure. Once the team has acquired their “building materials,” they will sort, wrap, and carefully stack the cans to create their canstructure. This year’s event will again be a hybrid event; elementary teams will build their structures at their schools (presentations will be recorded), and middle and high school teams will build their canstructures at Patrick Henry Mall on April 26, 2025 (presentations will be live). All teams are invited to attend the awards ceremony at Center Court @ 2:30pm on 4/26. Winning teams will receive trophies…but best of all, thousands of pounds of food will be donated to the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank!

Want more info? Visit www.yvchr.org/canstructure2025 for competition guidelines and rules, as well as the judging criteria. Register your team by February 14th! All teams will receive a detailed toolkit upon registration. Questions? Contact PJ Davis via email (programdirector@yvchr.org) or call/text 757-647-3988.
