This morning, I wanted to celebrate a different kind of history marked by progress, equality, and the triumph of hope. I wanted to write about shattering barriers and embracing a future where women’s rights and freedoms are undeniably secure.
Instead, I am writing about the fear that has shadowed this election. This fear has become a reality, as has the projection of Donald Trump as the next president. This election chose division over unity, hate over hope, and a vision that threatens to unravel the progress we have fought so hard to achieve.
I am heartbroken. I did not want to share this future with you, nor the one I believe we hoped for. It is excruciating to witness our nation take this step backward, jeopardizing the physical safety, economic security, and bodily autonomy of so many.
Yet, even in this darkness, there are sparks of light. Maryland voters made history by passing Question 1, safeguarding reproductive freedom in our constitution. Angela Alsobrooks shattered barriers, becoming Maryland’s first Black U.S. Senator and only the fourth Black woman in the Senate. These victories remind us that progress is still possible, even in the face of immense challenges.
This is not the message I wanted to write, but it is the one we must embrace. Fear is real, but so is our collective strength. For 53 years, the Women’s Law Center of Maryland has stood unwavering in its mission to protect women’s rights and support survivors. That work is more critical now than ever. Together, we will continue standing for safety, security, and autonomy.
In Solidarity,
